Ah yes, KP,one of the joys one would care to forget!!!!!! Did they have the automatic potatoe peelers when you were in or did you still have to peel potatoes the "old fashioned" way?

They had the automatic peelers, if you could call them that, kind of a spinning drum with a cheese grater surface on the inside. Throw the potato in, and if you waited long enough, you had a perfectly peeled potato, the size of a golf ball...............

Max, the attached is real poor pic quality, but I remembered this cover page because I thought the engines shown were the wildest stuff I'd ever seen. All GM engines developed around 65-67 when GM was Not in racing!

You can't clearly see the engines, but you can get the idea this was some wild stuff at the time. The dapper dressed guy looks like Zora A. Duntov.

Amazing that Bill France seemingly had the power & influence to stop all of that kind of engine development by Detroit at the time. Such a shame in a way, but he did keep things much "cheaper" for the nascar guys for a good while when it came to engines.

23, I must have went in during pre-potato peeling machine days. Apparently they got them sometime while I was across the big pond. If I was peeling, it took approx 10 bushels of spuds to have one bushel peeled in the end. The first time I had KP duty, 5 of us peeled potatoes from 4:30 am till around 11 - just for the noon meal. Impressed me so much I still remember that day. haha.

I'm posting this one just because it's so pretty. Can't remember, Hemifred might have mailed it to me. I like billet!

J.
The only potato peeler I saw during my tour was when I was at Huntsville. Maybe because it was a hi-tech missle base, the rest of my tour was the old tried and true manual peelers. A lot of difference from the TFX billet piece in the pic.

James, interesting how that mid-60's pic of the GM engine projects all seem to have fairly wide valve covers...

Yep, it's a real poor pic but I was hoping someone would notice what you did. That's the reason I posted the pic. I'm probably wrong, but it seems like the engines were 3 cammers & a Hemi. Believe one of them was even based on an Olds block. I remember looking closely at that pic and it appeared those engines were much more complete & serious than just displays.
It's sad that not a single one of those engines ever went into a car.

Going back to the pretty pic of the TFX block, did you ever investigate the potential of using one for a big inch Hemi, know they have a wider pan rail than a KB for stroker clearance, but other than that I'm really not that familiar with them. Seems like they could go bigger on the bore with billet material supporting the sleeve instead of cast, and obviously they could go to a 4.840" bore space if they changed the CNC program, don't know if they would though.

Don't forget that there was some outragous roadracing programs back then, and that could be what some of those engines were being developed for.

Yes, your right about that. Though right now, I'd probably just take a billet chev styled block and change the headbolt pattern to accept Hemi heads & change the lifter angle accordingly. Pistons would be no problem. That block would just make everything SO much easier to get parts for.
