Default Oiling Question For Sanborn

fairly well versed with all the oil mods, have been doing them for quite sometime, however we have been using the Melling HV pump and so far had great success with it, our new motors is probably the most radical we have ever built, should i change the spring in the pump with the hemi style spring, not sure if i agree with higher pressure, have always prefered higher volume, this motor will spend its life in the mid 7's, large cubic inches, we dont usually turn them as hard, this is a 413cid, with extremely massaged Indy X heads....already mocked up several times, final assembly underway
thanks
Luke

Default Hello

Nice to see you getting back to it. I take it things have calmed down a little? Let me know about the heads, I have had a lot of questions.
Thanx and Good Luck
Allen

The best answer I can give is "Buy the spring, have it ready".

The only way to know what you need is to run the engine, see what the pressure is at racing RPMs. If you are planning to run at 7500, then you want about 75PSI of oil pressure. You pull the pan and change the spring to get the pressure you need.

You could also use an oil pump dyno as shown just use a light oil when testing. I bought this one from speedway but it would be easy to make

thumbsup Oil Pump Dyno

Those work great for setting the bypass spring tension. Use a light oil, my machinist uses the solvent tank, and see where the pressure gets to with a good spin. You may have to include a little loss for piping to the main bearings. I would like to see at least 5 psi added to allow for loss along the way. Remember it is the most remote bearing that gets hurt first.

So I would shoot for 80 psi at the pump, assuming there is 5 psi pressure drop in the block, oil filter and reduction of pressure due to flow at the bearings. The light oil should replicate warm engine oil. JMHO

Snow plow hydraulic oil should work good. It's really thin and still has lubricity. I wouldn't want to use my solvent tank with all the crap that's in there.
