Dreaming again... :(
Well I'm here dreaming about future projects again, and I want to rebuild the motor in my Ramcharger. Whats in the truck now is a 70's smog 440, however it does have a fresh set of 346 heads, Torker 2 intake, full aftermarket igniton system, hedman headers, and 3" exhaust. The engine now runs ok, but it is tired I.E. a lot of blow-by, and funny rattling noises coming from the bottom end. I want more power so here is what I am contemplating and was wanting to see if the combo would work... BTW the truck is used for playing.. such as Rock Crawling, and the occasional mud bog... The rest of the setup is 4sp, NP 205, Dana 60's front and rear, 4.11 gears, 6" lift, and 37" Hummer Tires...
I have a set of Speedpro 2295F pistons, steel crank and reconditioned rods. I would use everything that's already in the truck, including the fresh heads. They have stock size 2.08 x 1.74 stainless valves, with some minor port and bowl work. The compression ratio would be about 10.5 to 1. The camshaft I'm looking at is the Comp XR274HR. It looks just a smidge bigger than what might be optimum, but it's the smallest Hyd Roller I can find, besides Hughes, and I think it would bleed off a little of the compression. However the roller profiles generally make more low end power than what their flat tappet counterparts do, so I think it would be just fine... I am also wanting to try the Powerjection EFI kit, my 750 Eddy carb really doesn't care for rock crawling. The single plane might also be a little much for what I want as well, but I think it would work really well with the EFI... Does anybody have any experience with the XR274HR.. I probably overcam my vehicles, but I've always been pretty happy with what I've picked in the past... Do you guys have any suggestions? |

Seems for rock crawling and mud you would want to build a torque monster?

The cam you are looking at may not be good for the 10.5:1 compression ratio. This says its for a 9.0:1 CR.

Well yes I do want a lot of torque, but I also need it to not fall on it's face above 4,000, which is what it does now... Where I really need the power is from about 2,000 til about 6,500... For the rocks it is usually at idle, but in low gear about any motor can pull that....
