cam regrinding
Help, This may be a stupid question but here goes. I am having a stock 68 340 4 speed cam re-ground. They tell me that they grind it but do not take any lift out of it. Can anyone explain to me how that would work? It looks like if you grind the lobes on a cam all the way around the lift would be less. How is it posible to grind the cam and still have the same lift if you have taken metal off of the cam? It was explained to me but I still don't get it.

If you gring the egg shape of the cam equal all around, then theres less lift. If you gring the fat bottom more, effectivly shrinking the base circle of the cam, the lift can be mantianed or raised.
Longer pushrods may very well be needed. |

Another question.
How do they re-face the reground cam, or do they? Isnt a quality cam surface treated? |

Good question. I'd like to know that myself. New moly coating maybe?

Cams are not particularly hard, they are basically cast iron. The lifter is quite hard however. It's a compatability thing like the brass wrist pin bushing and the pin itself. Roller cams are a different animal since there is no sliding type wear like the flat tappet has to endure.
