Default Intake choice

Hi all.I am in the process of rebuilding my 360 in my 87 D-150.It will be a 371 when done with stock crank, rods, speed pro pistons with 2 valve reliefs as opposed to 4,lower wrist pin location to boost compression, thinner head gaskets,587 heads that have been bowl hogged and blended,2.02-1.60 stainless steel one piece valves, new guides and seats, milled 0.50,all new springs, locks and retainers. The cam is a Comp CHRY270 AH-8 with .224/.231@ .50 duration and 470/480 lift on a 108 LSA.I am using a 9 position keyway timing set so we can degree the cam in.The truck has a fresh 727 and a 2200-2800 rpm converter with 3.55 gears. Now to my question.I have two intakes that have been milled for this engine. One is a standard 2716 Performer and the other is an old TM-5.I am thinking that the Performer is not gonna be enough for this engine. Can the old Tarantula work on the street with an Eddy 650 AVS carb?

The Tarantula is a single-plane with a higher rpm range than the Performer. I think a 650 cfm would be more suited to the Performer, the TM-5 would probably like something bigger.

Thanks for that info.I can't seem to find the exact RPM range for it online.I think it is kinda a Torker prerunner as it looks similar to the original Torker 340 but with heat crossovers. It also isn't a very tall intake so I was thinking of using a 4 hole spacer.I do have at my disposal a 770 Street Avenger to try.

You'll find the claimed rpm range of the TM-5 in the 3000-7000 range or thereabouts whereas the Performer is Idle-550.

Just curious as to why you didnt have the intake side of the heads machined so you could run any intake you want to and not limjt your self to just the two you mentioned.

I didn't have a say in it.The machine shop did it 10 years ago when it was first built. This is as I said a rebuild. The Tarantula has not been milled as of yet that is why I am trying to gather more info on it.I would rather have a performer RPM (non ag) but I was trying to use what I already have. The intake in question is at another machine shop waiting on my intentions.

Depends on what you want to do...putt around town or full-fledged drag racing? The Performer will give you better "drivability" but the Tarantula will give the best high rpm torque/hp.

Just an afterthought.I had an 86 chevy truck that had a 358 dirt track engine in it.The intake was a Super Victor for 23 degree heads and it actually was very well mannered especially with 2.73 gears. It even had a 650 DP Holley, all the things that aren't supposed to "work" on a street engine let alone a 4000 lb pickup truck.I guess it all depends on combo.I don't really want a drag truck, but with the extensive work on the heads I don't want to choke it either.

Oh yeah,I talked to Edelbrock today and they said with the engine specs I gave them the RPM range will be in the 2500-7000 range.

Is there any way you could sell/trade both of those intakes for an Edelbrock RPM, RPM Air Gap, LD340, LD4b or Weiand Stealth or .......???...darn, I forgot the name of the other Weiand intake that looks like a Stealth but has a spread bore flange.

The regular Performer is best suited for a Stock rebuild. The Tarantula, like the original Torker, are junk compared to the intakes mentioned. It might work better than the Performer, but you would get better results from a good dual plane intake because your engine will spend most of it's time well within the slightly lower RPM range than the Tarantula. The dual planes mentioned typically have a range of up to 6500-6700, will be more responsive and easier to tune. The Tarantula and original Torker were bad enough to where Super Stock racers in the '70's used a modified LD340 for best performance. It wasn't until the Offenhauser Port-O-Sonic (with popsicle stick mods for Thermoquad applications) and the Holley Strip Dominator came out, did they switch to those intakes.
