Default 440 6-pac Cuda Engine Issue

Hello Everyone,

I own a 1970 Cuda with a 1978 440 engine. The motor was brand new when I bought it back in 1980. It has 906 heads and a very mild cam. I also installed a six pack set up on it from a 69 b body. All the carbs were re-built and should be in proper working order. Everything on this motor is new including the automatic 727.
The engine starts up fine, it revs up fine in neutral. But as soon as you put it in gear it starts to break up and runs like a pig! The only part on this motor that has not been tested was the manifold, Can it have a crack or warp that is causing a vacum leak?
Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, check for vacume leak(s) but it sounds like the advance is wrong

Quick check, get a buddy to hold the car running in gear and spray wd 40 around the manifold, if it picks up thats your leak found, easy to clean after too

I prefer spraying 409 around the gasket surfaces. It will give the RPM increase and it cleans up with a little water. I know a few people that just spray quick start around the surfaces. It will give a noteable RPM increase and there is no residue to clean up.

Most likely, the initial advance is incorrect or the center carb is not properly setup.

You can set the timing (approx 34ยบ BTDC at 2,000 RPM with the vacuum advance disconnected). Depending on the distributor, you may be able to adjust the vaccum advance with an allen wrench. Then you can change weights, to help with how much advance comes in and when.

For a mostly stock engine -

1) I block off the vac port on the carb.
2) Then I put it in gear and accelerate very hard.
3) If no deteonation (ping), I will advance the distributor. Then repeat step 2.
3a) If there is detonation, I back off the timing and repeat step 2. Once the detonation has stopped, I have found the max mechanicle advance timing.
4) Reconnect vacuum advance.
5) Put it in gear and see how she responds to part throttle acceleration.
6) If no detonation, advance the vacuum pot and repeat step 5. Keep doing this until you have detonation. Then back off the vaccum pot until the detonation stops.
If you don't have an adustable vacuum advance pot, you will need to back off distributor timing, until the detonation stops.

That is the best way that I have found to setup stock distributor. Those are the basic procedures that come with the MOPAR Electronic Ignition Conversion Kit
