Give me some specificity! I have no clue what you, rustycowl, do/don't know about T.Q.'S !
There is info that I would not disclose since I have "copywritten" my performance enhancing processes. Ask me a question and I will do my best to answer it, DAVID. |

Need id. help
I bought a TQ on a swapmeet to day and they told me it should be a 72 400ci carb, but it's not.
The # is 9078. What engine and year is it from?? Thanks. Joakim |

That is a 1977 440 a/t smogger carb that unfortunately would need mods to the top and base plate so that it will tune and run well on a non smogger engine, DAVID.

David: Here is a question that I think you would be the best qualified to answer for me. I know that the most desirable thermoquads were made from 72-75 because they were for non-smog cars or didnt have pollution add-ons etc. When you look at a 1980 leanburn carb you can see that you need to add a ported vacuum port for the distributor on the base and drill and tap a screw hole for a slow idle screw on the top. I would suppose that the needles and jets would be set up on the lean side because of the emissions and lean burn system. Other than the obvious electric vent bowl port on the newer version and the mechanical vent bowl port on the old, what is the difference between the two carbs? Why are the older versions supposed to be more tunable or easier to set u

what don't I know?
If you think about it, that's a pretty strange question. I mean if I knew what I don't know, ....well that's just too confusing.
Let's start with this: You alluded to identifying carbs by the numbers on the bowl cover, bowl, and throttle body. What numbers of tops, bowls, and bottoms go together? |
#38
|
|||
|
|||
Again, the "most" desireable T.Q.'s are the 1972-1974 carbs since these were not used on smog equipped engines.
It is the 1975 and up carbs(the exception being any 1974-1977 440 truck carbs)that have emplimentations added for smog provisions but often times the jetting and the metering rods were "richer" to compensate for leaner circuitry and the fact that the smogger carbs had the 12 degree taper idle mix screws thus rendering the carbs untuneable, just as the factory intended. The id's of the main and hi speed bleeds were enlarged to "lean" the main and hi speed circuits. The larger the id's the leaner the circuit and the smaller the id, the richer the circuit; more air intriduced into the bleed, the leaner the circuit will go/the less air introduced into the bleed, the richer the circuit. There is no printed info on matching a specific base and the #/top#/bowl#. You would have to simply know what parts will interchange. 1974 carbs for example, were a transition from the 1973 top plate with the 1975 style accelerator pump arm boss/ linkage rod. Late 1978 carbs were another transition year from the 1975-up tops/bowls/base plates to the 1979-1984 style. In certain cases, mixing/matching parts just will not work without fabricating parts. Again, you would have to be aware of the compatability of the different oem styles of the T.Q. QUIZ: what was the part # of the very first oem big block T.Q., and what was the part # of the very last oem T.Q.? The first correct answer will get a pair of new needle/seats(1972- 1984 oem and SuperQuad carbs)for free and must have the year and application correct, DAVID. |

David: Your explination cleared allot of questions up for me. Now I will give the test a shot.
Earliest: Not counting the Competion Series, 6090 1972 400ci not sure of the application so I will say Dodge Royal Monaco because my uncle had one. Latest: 9291 1980 446 Motorhome. |

Ok it's a trick question right? You want the first Bigblock TQ and the last TQ period-In that case-
First - 6090 on a '72 400 Last - 9391 on a '84 318 |

Okay guy's how about
my wife's 440 with sixpack pistons and 292-509 purple cam and some portmatched 346 with a streetdominator intake.
It has an Edelbrock 750 and I don't think I get out the most of this combo, how about my newly bought 9078 TQ, I have the old NOS stripkit for TQ's. Any hint's how to make more power with the things I have. And I'm looking for the good website I saw a year ago on TQ's Thanks. Joakim |

David: I went to your web site and it has the rebuild prices etc. but I would like some other prices. You mentioned before that you could modify the upper assembly for a fee and I was wondering how much to modify my 9293s? You also mentioned that I need to get rid of the 12 deg idle screws and replace them with 22 I think it was, do these have the same size threads and can just be replaced or do you have to drill and tap in new threads? How much for a pair of good idle screws? How much for primary and secondary jets and a set of rods to tune my carb to my engine? Lots of questions but I am sure everybody else will benefit from the info also.

Bigfoot, the idle mix screws are all 10-32. New 22 degree idle mix screws are $8/pair. I would have to know what size the primary/2ndary jets are since the jets might even be too large for the application and would not need to be that big after the mods to the top/base plate are done. The price for the mods are contigent upon the top plate having the 12 volt idle mix solenoid on the front of the top plate, DAVID.

Demon - I would like to see if you could do a segment on AFB style carbs.
I raelly have a hard time tuninng these thing with the strip kits given. It always seems that you need an in between jet or metering rod. The two four set up is what really kicks my tail with the edelbrock brand. Theay just dont seem to be as easy as a holley or a demon to tune. Maybe I'm to use to the controlled vaccum leak type carbs. This is the statement I always get when I mention a holley or demon carb to a AFB or Tkermo-q carb man. Thanks |

Nice 70 Dart 340man!
I can write a general info post outlining trouble-shooting on the Edelbrocks/Federal Mogul AFB'S. I can outline simple tuning tricks and trouble-shooting. Also I have written interchange info on the above carbs and the AVS as well as the old oem style Carter AFB'S and this would cover all interchangeable parts for the 5 major groupes of the AFB'S. Give me a few days and I write this info and post it under the title: 'AFB/AVS/Edlebrock testing/tuning' and we can ALL add needed info to the thread, DAVID. |

ok now iam thinking lol , i just bought a 440 {1972 stamped out of a 73 } it has a plastic bowl , i will have to check the numbers ,iam going to build the 440 for my 69 charger ,i have a new in the box holly 750 dp street dom,carb with elect choke. before i use that i would like to know if the carb i have would work better ,and if so what would it cost to rebuild it ? its pretty clean as it is .and if the holly is my best bet ,whats a clean TQ worth ?
thanks christopher www.1fastski.com |

I've been giving 20 to 30 bucks for them left and right around here. Every body likes to follow suit and be like sheep running holley's around here. Kids ... ??
Well lets see 750 cfm vs. 800 cfm with better throttle response than a holley ever thought about having. You be the judge. I'll take the TQ almost every time. |

1fastski, my opinion would be based on the actual part # on your T.Q. which can be found on the driver rear corner of the base plate; it was origonally an 850 cfm carb. I would personally recomend the T.Q. since it will require very minimal tuning and absolutely no other extra tuning parts such as jets/trick parts to get max performance. I would be glad to custom jet the carb for your 440, DAVID.

1fastski, that is a 1973 440 industrial carb and should work fine on your 440/Street Dominator intake, DAVID.

Wieand action plus 180 degree dual plane works great with these carbs on small blocks and no adapter plates needed.
