Actually I'm gonna have to correct DWC here. There were 318's with 360 heads built by the factory. They are commonly referred to as "police package" 318's. They aren't nearly as common as a regular 318 but are still pretty obtainable. Got mine out of a 1988 diplomat squad car. Check the VIN of the vehicle for an S which indicates the Hi-Po engine.

just look for the S....All this time I thought that guy was full of Sh*t too.... hey what kinda other stuff was in the police package? Crazy thing is I know where 3 late 80s police cruzers are and should get this stuff pretty cheap. Ya learn something new everyday

The late 80's 318 E58 police car package engine had swilr port 318 heads and that's one reason it ws such a dog. You'll also find them with a spreadbore intake either a thremoquad or a quadra junk depending on the year. THey will also have a windage tray, and a double roller timming chain. If your lucky it will have the HD colling package with all the tranny and oil coolers and lines too. And some will have roller cam engines depending on what year it is. I drove one for work and I still own a retired one.

alright,
MR 318 has to set everything strait here. i have a factory 318, block #4387530-318 heads #4027596 (big port 360 head) came factory same block # came with4343475 heads (another big port 360) so, chrysler also sais they put 360 heads on a 318 from the factory, for some police and hi-po applications. oh, they are not dogs and, the reason why they dont run as good as you would think? not enough cam and compression for a 360 head |

just bolt em on????? can you say BOG? the best way to make a mild 318 (mild means 400 hp or less) is to use old 675 heads, do some minor porting, and a good bowl job. put 1.88/1.60 valves in it and it will out torque the 360 head every time (unless you want to go totally radical) |

We milled a setof x heads with 2.02 's and use a mild cam and made over 400 hp in a 318 bore. .030 over and never turned it over 6000 either. Not hard to do.

you mean wich heads are they?
68-74 or 75. they have a lot of meat on em for hogging, and are usually 3-6 cc's smaller than the 973 head (after like 75) different (better cooling too on the ex side) put a torker 318 on em, with a good cam and headers, and ittl eat a 318 with 360 heads, till over 550 lift |

YEAH, I LOVE IT! HotRod them 318's! A buddy of mine in the 80's had a Duster(318, 360 heads, fairly big cam, 4-speed) went 14.6s on regular street radials. Not the ideal combo, but, who knew! And if the stock 318 heads work better with a little massaging.........way-cool-daddy'o!

14.6 is very respectable, did he mill his heads? if not, and has stock pistons/stock deck, he's got like 7.0 to 1 just think how it would run with 9to1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the reason 360 heads might be the way to go, is it is hard to find a small port manifold |

The best head for a 318 is the Magnum head. Good chambers, 1.92I-1.62E valves and they out flow X heads. Without any work they can support around 400 horse power.

the pushrod is in the way, period, no way around it, you cant get rid of the bottleneck, and there is more of a bottle neck in the magnum heads than the X. the magnum intake ports will not outflow the Xes, at least on the intake side, nor will any other roller head.

magnums
dodgetkboy78,
I tend to disgree with that last coment in regards to magnum heads. I've beaten this point till I can't talk no more.(ask Rumblefish). It's not so much flow as much V.E. and the quench in the the chamber. Magnums have such a superior chamber then any open chamber 60's, 70's design. Out of the box the 380 horse crate motor dyno'd a 407 H.P. No porting, no milling, no tricks and a smaller intake valve the a stock X head. What I don't understand from most people is a comparsion from 60's tech to modern tech. You don't make heads any more on a piece of paper everything is done with computers and is superior to any other head cast in sand. Hopefully LA360Dart will right in. His dart runs real hard I met him a Irwindale Speedway a couple of weeks back. 360 la short block(non mopar performance)Magnums heads Racer Brown cam, dual plane and 3.55's his car weighing 3400 pounds ran 8.11 at nearly 88 MPH his motor is so smooth it was breaking late model Mustang's hearts. Magnum heads are cheap way for power, trust me. |

well, i hope your right then, cause i got a mean magnum waiting for my duster to be done
the combustion chamber is way better, but flow...............................whatya do? i love my Xes, and my J's, and, i hope to god, that 360 magnum will impress me ill look and see if i can find some flowbench info, that'll help, but, like i said, i do agree on the chamber and then, this thread, it was about 360 heads on a 318. |

I don't have any thing on hand in regards to flow all I have are numbers from Ryan at Shadydell.http://www.shadydellspeedshop.com/magnumrt.htm
He is the man.. Granted these numbers are for R/T's they have a bigger intake port volume. Hope that helps |
