98 Ram doesn't want to start all the time
98 ram 360 I'll drive the truck some where park for little bit go to start it and it will just crank and crank won't start. i can hear the fuel pump pressurize when key is on. Then the next day hop in it and it fires right up. Shut it off starts right back up rund fine for few days then does same thing. Check engine like comes on and goes off haven had it checked yet.
What do you think it is? Crank sensor? Fuel filter? |

Don't guess, get a code reader and check for codes.

Know where I can find a code reader that isn't $300? Will codes be stored even if I took battery out and put back in truck?

Many parts stores will check codes free. And there is a sequence that the cluster lights do, which varies from rig to rig.
Any code stored is in the computer, so pulling the battery won't erase. |

Or just cycle the key three times and read it out on the odometer

The "wrist twist" wouldn't work on my '98 5.9L Ram, had to buy a coded reader.

I apologize if I'm highjacking this thread. John, how good is the U480 scanner? It would seem pretty easy to shell out 13 or 14 bucks for one.
I'm also considering a used Sun scope the guy wants 100 bucks for. I know you can't read codes with a scope, so would have to get both. |

I can't personally attest to the quality of that particular one, merely posted it as an example of less expensive code readers. For simply reading and resetting codes you don't need much.

There is a residual pressure valve in the fuel pump assembly. When it fails, it will slowly release pressure in the fuel lines.
When you first start the engine, all injectors fire, then the engine cranks. If there is no pressure in the fuel lines, it will be hard to start. Turn the key to 'ON' for a second or two. This will pressurize the fuel lines. Then turn the key to 'OFF'. Now start the engine. In the end, you will need to replace the fuel pump. My old '96 Ram did this to me. About a year after it had those symptoms, the fuel pump died. |
