Default head gasket question

I have a 1975 360 In my 1970 'cuda. As I have mentioned in previous threads in the past few months after putting the engine in my car, I have been having problems with the engine getting too hot( up to 230 degrees) while sitting in traffic, if not higher. When I get moving the temp goes down to normal 180 deg. What I have done so far- 3-core aluminum radiator, 8 impeller water pump, pusher fan, 8 blade regular fan, 160 deg. t-stat. So I took the heads off to check for a blockage in the block. After I found no problems and a thorough cleaning out, I started to rebuild. I noticed that one hole in the block and head is not there on the head gasket (on the attached image) not allowing water to pass through. It is located on the very front at the water pump. Is this correct or is the hole supposed to be punched out allowing water to pass through? It's on both sides.

Hi cudanut jim,

I'm not that familiar with the 340/360 blocks, but on the 383/400/440 blocks the end passages provide most of the water for the heads. If you have the same passage in the heads, then I'm guessing you have the wrong head gaskets or have the gaskets flipped from back to front. I have a picture of a Mopar 360 head gasket (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/dc...-size/5-9l-360) and it shows one water passage for either the front or back of the block.

The gaskets are made to go on one way only. There are 2 little nipples, one on each side, that are in different places to make sure of it.

Why are the water port holes blocked (one on each side) by the gasket?
