8 1/4 Rear
Rule Change - Can run a locked rear this year. Does anyone make a spool/mini spool for the 8 1/4" (1973)? Currently a non sure-grip 3.23 r&p. I guess I can weld the spiders but don't the welds eventually break ? I do have a sure-grip that I could add. Have never shimmed a rear to be locked ,but willing to learn. What's the best way to go ?? Running on dirt 5/8 mile.

I would weld it and just check it once in a while. just jack the car up and grab one wheel and rock it back and forth, and watch the other wheel, if it isnt momentarily going the same direction when you do it, Id pop the cover and check it, It was probabaly time to change the grease anyways!

I ran a welded 8 1/4 with a 3:91 ratio on the dirt last year and had no breakage issues.

I run both 1/4 and 3/4 welded on dirt for years without any problems. A full spool would mean less rotating mass though.

I believe the 8 1/4 aftermarket is non-existent. Time to get the welder out and weld those spiders.

8 1/4 rear
The onlything close to a mini spool for the 8 1/4 that ive found is the powertrax they sell for about 400.00 they work like a locked rear when your going straigh and rachet when you turn, so looks like you better practice your welding maybe if we all called on the same day so one would decide they could make some money building a mini spool for the 8 1/4 lol of course then the track would have to ban them so the chevys could keep up we weld are and it broke what rod do you guys you?

I just preheat it with the torch and weld it with wire, that way you dont have to clean all the slag off, seems to work. then I pack it full of old welding gloves to keep the heat in it. Then I check it when its cool for any spatter there might be and clean it good.

If ya got money to burn I found this...
http://www.nationaldrivetrain.com/sh...ml/page23.html just google "detroit locker" and see what comes up. I don't know how well they work in race cars, but they do work pretty well in off road trucks! Jay |
