Now that the hot days are upon us so are our hot cars.
My question concerns radiators. My 72 cuda has edelbrock Indy ported heads, 10 to 1 comp. Old set of cast pistons from Herb McCandless, shotpeened and polished rods, polished and chambfered cast crank, comp cams 525lift 305 dur. hydraulic cam...RPM intake, Speed demon 750..MSD6AL..727 w/10"conv..3.91 gear. Run best of 8.03 in eigth w/1.68 60's. I feel it should definetly run faster. Just 84-85 trap speed. AS you can see it is fairly stout. My problem is heat. Runs close if not 200 deg. now. 85 deg. outside. Herb actually rode with me the other day and said to get the temp down. He said that he ordered a radiator from Paddock for his hemi challenger. Fixed his cooling problems. Price is 300$ with a 2 week lead time. I want to ride NOW. Any suggestions for other vendors would be appreciated. The Paddock rad. was 4 core. Mine now is 2 core.

You can have your existing radatior recored. Check the yellow pages for a Radaitor Shop in your area. Normally they can have it back to you in a couple of days. You might as well go with a 4 row because the incremental cost is minimal. While you are at it, ask about a high efficiency core. The high efficiency core will have a higher fin count. Cost is reasonable, about $250 in my area. Stay away from el'cheapo thermostats and make sure your pressure cap is in good shape.

Ask them not to paint it so you can do it yourself, it'll look a lot better that way.

Order the 4 core. While you are waiting you can get a radiator additive from summit or jegs that will lower your temp. I've used it on race cars and it does lower temp about 20 degrees. Works best with water.

Brian,

Read 'The Impossible Dream" article in Feb '01 Mopar Action. on pge 47, Scott of SD Engineering says "that in his high horse small block he went from conventional to reverse cooling and dropped 10 jet sizes and picked up 50 horse". I guess routing the coolant in the opposite direction gets it to where it needs to be most. he also mentions an electric fan, Spal, italian brand, works well.
Give Scott a call at (401)732-4047 in Rhode Island.

Good luck,

P.S. how are those Bulls doing?

I appreciate all the help from everybody. Herb is doing fine. He's still doing a ton of work out of home. He is always a wealth of info. The bulls, I'm not sure but I will look into that reverse low cooling. Every body have fun and stay COOOLLLL!!!!
