Starting a 451 stroker
I'm putting a 451 stroker with 727 in my '73 charger. This is a brand new engine and I was wondering if anyone could give me any hints as to proper first time start up and break in procedures. Thanks for the help!

There are about as many ideas on breakin as there are bumps on a pickle. If using moly filled rings and proper finish on the bores the process is almost instantaneous (just don't mat it for a few hundred miles). The one constant in the process is to prime the oiling system and rotate it while priming to get all the cavities filled. Overheads only get oil when cam lines up with drilling in block and head and then only one side at a time.

First thing is to go down to your local GM dealer and get a bottle of their break in lube. Its like $6.50. That is cheap insurance against wiping out a new cam. Run the oil pump while turning the engine over with a socket til you see oil on both rockers. Stab the dist. Fire it up! Get the timing close and keep the RPM's up above 2500 for a 1/2 hour to break in the cam. Have a garden hose ready to spray the radiator to keep it cool. With the idle turned up like that it runs lean. Push the squiters now and then to give it more fuel to help cool it. Check for oill and water leaks. All that goes well change the oil. Drive it a few miles, change the oil again. Your good to go. Hopefully

dont put a hose in the radiator like some manual s say, you need it to get to operating temperatures ASAP. Moly rings seat fast, vary the RPM s after the 20 minutes, better to do a few 1st gear starts and compression brakes. But priming is a big deal on these motors. I had to inject oil into the oil filter mount to get it to start sucking fo some reason.
