Sanborn !! Another question.
What do you think would about installing a cam in that D300 to get it to work in a different rpm range with those low 4.88 gears. I'd hate to have to pull them, but the thing wont run more than 55 or 60 at the most with those gears in it and it drank almost a half tank from Columbia to my house. If you think a cam swap might help, got any suggestions? I need to do it on the cheap as usuall, so I think an O.D. unit is out of the price range for now. I really hate to change it from it's original state, but it's just not usable to me in this state.

I've never personally owned a truck like yours. But; I remember Pat Melson had an older truck like that, had a gas mileage problem as well. He installed a dual exhaust, it helped the performance greatly, improved the gas mileage as well. I suspect the engine has a lot of back pressure. Duals may help.
I think some others may have the same basic truck as your. Maybe they can help! |

Thanks. I just feel that the gear keeps it turnning a lot of rpms and that it most likely will have to go at some point. Hate to loose that kind of pulling power though. Wonder what gear is in that one up at Clantons Paving Co.?

I have a 70 d200 with 410's, I wish I had 488's, but I have 35 inch super swamper boggers on it, I cant even use 4th gear on the road unless Im goin 70 then I can shift to 4th and she bogs. The 318 in it likes to rev to make any power, headers, four barrel and good ignition 455 cam and she is still a turd, I just need 488's and all will be well.
So to sum up this message try putting taller tires on it, |

Nice truck. Mines got a straight axle, but it's not a 4x4. Maybe I should just go up to a taller tire all around since I need new ones anyway. That should help some. Wonder how tall I can go and only stay 7 inches wide with the dual wheels? The rears are 7.0 but the fronts are 7.5 and there is just enough room to get my finger between the tie rod end and the side wall. Too close for comfort so I need to stay with a 7 inch wide tire at the most.

I know its a two wheeler. What (if any) kind of bed or box does it have now, since it has duals.
I want to make a crew cab wedgebed some day out of a 70 or 71, and put a cummins in it out of a school bus, or a 91 to 93 dodge truck would work too. If you can show a picture of your new purchase that would be great. |

I'll try to get you pic of it sometime today. It's got a wood and steel flat bed with cattle rack stakes on it. It was used solely on the farm. Frame wise it sits up high for what you have there in your pic,but I guess it could be modded to work. I was wanting to put something like a wrecker bed on it and use it to pull a fith wheel enclosed trailer with it. I've been playing around with some drawings, but have not made up my mind yet.

Sorry, it took me a while to get you a pic, and I know it's not all that good either. Trucks pretty solid, needs paint and seat redone, other than that, it's very road worthy. All the brakes have been gone through now,so it will stop on a dime. Liked the car hauler pic of the '71 you posted. Wished I had a bed like that for mine.

Looks like to me it is a 68 model. It has the hood like the older style but it is different because the grille changed, you could put a 69 thru 71 hood on it but you cant put a 61 thru 67 hood. Yours has the hydro clutch and a mid motor mount too as for 69 they went to a z bar and got rid of the mid mount too. That is a good block also, does it have the solid harmonic hub or does it have a rubber isolated one? The rods are good also.
I remember seeing a picture of Petty having a wedgebed truck like yours, I cant remember where I saw it. Thanks for posting pictures. |

Yeah, it's a '68. It does have the mid motormount and hydro clutch. That thing really feels funny. Guess it takes getting used to. I have a pic somewhere with a truck like this with a box on the back and a tag along with Petty's RoadRunner on it. Don't remember if it wasthe '68 or '69 though.

I just picked up a 65 4 door and I am planning a diesel swap and wedgebed.
I am looking for a 91 -93 cummins in a two wheel drive dually, I will then cut the front end and stub it into the 65 and also the dual rear. I am just in the planning stage now, or parts gathering stage that is. |

Cage, what kind of wheels will fit this thing? They are 6 lug wheels. I want to get rid of the 2 piece wheels and use 15's if possible since the tires will be cheaper. Do you know what size wheel studs they use too? I can't get the lugs off the front and may have to torch them off. My air and my electric impact did not even phase these things. I bet they aint been off in 15 years or more. Truck runs good, but I need to do some front brake work and get some new tires. would not mind getting some simulators too.

I really dont know. I was thinking the same thing a couple days ago. I found a truck that has the same setup, but it was diff. Yours is a heavy duty type, It has that filler piece under the grille and fender flares and running boards, the truck I found while junkyarding is like a 1/2 ton, but it had a flat bed with the dually set up, problem is, it is 6 lug also. weird.
I have a buddy that took the centers out and welded them into 15 inch rim shells, works really good. so I would go that route. Take a torch and heat the lug nut up and then impact em off. I dont think they had the left hand theads on the big trucks like yours I want to make an old school wrecker out of the dually truck I saw. |

Old cast iron single plane 318 intake ???
If your truck has a 318 in it I may have some fuel for the fire.
Compcams website shows a few dyno pulls on stock dual plane 318's. The torque and power begin to drop off as low as 2000 RPM. These 318's seem to wheeze out way before their potential. I'm thinking that your truck needs the old cast iron single plane manifold - and maybe a step up in cam (mostly for fun). If you're pulling in the 3500 RPM range you probably need a bigger cam. Just a thought for discussion. |
