Another rear end question
I want to convert my 76 dart to large bolt pattern. I have another 7 1/4 rear in a 75 dart parts car. Now both cars have 7 1/4 rearends, would it be easier to just swap out axle shafts, or to swap out the whole rear end?

ratios
unless you want to change ratios too I would sure think just an axle swap would be much easier.

You mean....
swap the axle shafts?

'73 - '76 used the same length axle shafts. I would just swap the shafts and drums.

Do the axle shafts come out like an 8 3/4s, where the only thing holding them in is the flange bolts?

Yes, only the flange bolts hold them on. Just swap the axles and when you get a '73 and up front disc car youan swap the spindle and brakes onto your car to get the front pattern to match the rears.

I hope you aint serious. The thrush muffler side pipes are bad enough, but the fuzzy dice is a no no go.

I'm pretty sure that the 7¼ used a C-clip design, to keep the axles in place

floaters
Those must have a horse shoe clip on them like brand X then,if you had removed the backing plate and cross shaft, they would have came out.Been a few years since I had one apart, sorry.

Acording to my book the 7-1/4 axle is retained by a "C" clip and the flange nuts. The 8-1/4 is held only by tyhe flange nuts. But what you did can be just as easy. By now you should have been rolling down the road.

The 7 1/4" has no "C" clips; after removing the flange nuts, the axle pulls straight out. A puller may be needed.
The 8 1/4" does have "C" clips. |

Thanks for the correction John. I'm a little rusty on the photos of the rear covers. Therefore I misidentified the 2 in my MOTOR Manual that book doesn't Identify by 7-1/4 or 8-1/4 and yes the book did state about possibly having to use a puller

The large bolt pattern with the 10x2 1\2" inch rear drums were fitted to the A-bodies in 1973. Unless some conversion has been made both cars have identical rear ends. Are you guys sure it isnt just as easy to unbolt the springs on both ends, disconnect the brake line and shocks and roll the rear from under the car?

Hi John,
You are right. It would be easeyer to unbolt the rear springs and all. I just didn't want to tell someone how they should or shouldn't do it. My 73 had the 7-1/4 with the large bolt and manual disc. I swaped it for the 8-1/4 from a 340 Dart Sport. Also I added a second main leaf and that made a world of diference. I have a 8-3/4 to put in I just never did it and now when I do I'm going to put a disc conversion on the rear. There are other things that I should post because I'm looking for some parts. Just have to find the time to play on this site. Bob |
