Okay, guys, I officially claim the title of oldest codger on the forum and first Mopar owned. In nearly two years of posting, no one has beat my '48 Plymouth, which I bought in 1955. Another guy from North Dakota had a '40 coupe, but it was a hot rod with a 318.

One fact pointed out by all the posts is that most of us fell in love with Mopar containing nothing more than a six-cylinder or a 318! Many of us graduated to hi-po models, but it didn't take a Hemi to get the juices flowing. It just proves the magic of Mopar is not always measured in quarter mile times.

my first car was a 79 dodge aspen /6 with magnum 500s,it was red and silver ,actually a really sweet lil car(although underpowered).my step dad was a used car salesman and he found it for me it had been owned by a baptist preacher.but this car was to new for me and i wanted sumthin old so i bought a 70 buick skylark(that car was a real pile of doodoo) and isold it for scrap and bought a 72 pontiac ventura that i drove for 4 years then swapped a 350 into it and it lasted about two weeks before it blew all to hell.so i bought a 73 ford 500 from my grandmother for 300$ just for a rider.my buddie was selling his 72 340 4 spd cuda so he could build a 72 rr and i bought the cuda.since then i have owned only mopars and nuthin else,i cant explain it but they get in your blood. i also read in some of these posts about guys selling their cars because of marriage or children and i feel so thankful that my wife is as rabid as iam about these old chryslers as i am,in fact when she was expecting our son i suggested that i sell my 72 RR clone ,she insisted that ididnt.i currently own a 65 dodge a-100 pickup(winter ride),a 72 rr clone,my wife has a 73 satellite sebring plus, and 85 5th avenue(and possibly a 66newport),my 11 yearold daughter has a 74 duster with factory sunroof and fold down seat and my 2 year old son has one of the sweetest custom painted pedal cars in the area.all i can say is that the family that hotrods together stays to gether

Unhappy ponti-what?

Strictly speaking, the first mopar I ever had was an '80s K-car, a wood paneled compact Chrysler wagon. The engine started making weird noises just as I drove it off the lot. Turned out the dealer's attempt at repairing a blown head gasket with radiator leak sealer didn't work out. I returned it, got a thoroughly thrashed Shelby 2.2 , which had the turbo out for some reason. Once I had the front suspension re-welded to the frame, it turned out to be a real hoot to drive, even without the turbo. Neither of these vehicles inspired any MOPAR related loyalty at the time.

Fast forward 7 years to 1993, and I was into convertibles. Having had a '70 Olds Cutlass, a '73 Cougar 351, I had to have one again. The only thing interesting with a drop top within my price range of 2 grand turned out to be a '68 barracuda 318, and the guy even let me have a 340 4sp parts car for an extra 3 hundred. This thing had a fist-sized rust hole in the rear quarter, it had been hit and it was shaped like a banana. It never went straight, broke a rear end within a week and had cost me another grand in a month just to keep it running. The top got cut, bums broke into it, cats peed in it. The 318 wouldn't die, no matter how many times I made ham-fisted beginner mistakes, like driving without much oil for miles, mistakenly connecting the alt charge wire into the block (nice back fires) etc. I picked up Mopar Action for the first time, started looking for parts for the car, and in spite of the horrendous piece of junk I had bought, I was hooked on Mopars.

By 1999 this cuda was a 340-s clone with a road racing twist. I would say it was probably one of the nicest looking a-bods you've never seen. I was silly enough to go through my records, and I had spent over $25.000 on the car.

A few months later, I sold the car for 9 grand to raise cash for another, career-related project. Once I recovered financially, I tried to buy the car back. The guy laughed, and told me of the leather covers he was adding to the custom buckets I had installed. He told me he'd never sell. Bastard...

Last year, I'm eying this sexy cuda coming down the street. Everything looked SO right. As he gets closer, I realize this is my car. The guy had a smile from ear to ear, didn't notice me at all and just motored along. The car looked sweeter than ever, and I could have cried.

The moral of the story: Don't sell your first true Mopar love!

Mine was 70 dart. A /6 car with a 318/2brl in it. Originally orange, then yellow, purple, red, then green (when I got it). I drove it for a few years, went through one 7 1/4. It smokes the tires pretty good from a severly fried 318/2brl. I just non opt it so I can save up and get her runnin reliably. Me and another guy from school (class of 2000), where the only ones with an old mopar. We also got busted for doing burn outs on graduation night. Didnt get a ticket though. hehehe

Englew, I almost bought a Hy-Drive '53 for my second Mopar, but found a 3-speed manual Cranbrook that was in better shape. I beat that car to a pulp, and it kept on going like the Energizer Bunny. Next car was a '55 Plymouth, and then when I was sent overseas, I bought another '53 Plymouth. It was also a great car.

I've always been fascinated by the '57 Fury with the 318 dual 4 bbl engine. As far as I remember (talk about your blind editors), none of the car mags ever tested one.
I assume you must have challenged the fabled '57 Chevy fuelie or 270 at some time--how did that turn out?

My first MoPar--'50 Dodge Meadowbrook 4 dr purchased in '58. Bought it for transportation to college. Ugly, dependable, totally underpowered. Finally put dual carbs, dual exhaust, milled head on it. Not quick off the line, but amazing passing power-could stay with lots of V-8's between 50 & 80 mph.

I got my first Mopar when I was 15, back in 1979, it was dads hand me down 67 D-100 pickup with 318, 4-speed, 3.23 sure grip and very loud Thrush straight through dual exhaust. I only had it for a few weeks until ma and pa caught me ripping up and down the streets cackling the pipes and sold it the very next weekend.
Then came a hand me down 63 Valiant 4 door, 170 slant 6 with a 3 on the tree. Wow did that suck!! A few months after that I bought a 72 Duster 318 3-speed floor shift, Hemi Orange. And over the years I have had many various A bodies. 4 of witch were 340 cars, 2 I still have.

The first MOPAR I bought was a 1969 Chrysler 300 Convert. 440 TNT, 727 AUTO, 3.91 sure grip.....paid $1,800 for it in 1984. What a great car that was!! My dad worked for Chrysler and one of his co-workers had it for sale, that's how I found it. The color was bronze with a black top and black bucket seat interior. It needed the usual resto, so I put new quarters on it..new trunk..etc..etc.. Built up the 440 with a .509 MP cam, opened up the 906's, 750 holley, headers 3000 stall conv. The first race I had was with a Buick Grand National and his jaw was on the ground when a 4,500 lb barge walked all over his black jewel!! I never lost to any of my friends cars....beefed up trans ams and novas etc.... Sold it a few years later to finance a big block 69 Dart project. I miss that 300 still...... (thanks, dad for finding that car for me.....it was a FUN ride)!!

My first mopar is what im driving now. My '67 Satellite, came original w/318 now has a '68 - 440. It's tons of fun, and i'm only 17.... I have a feeling i'll tend to get into trouble with this car. I drove a '95 ford ranger for a year, never got pulled over. I had my car for two weeks and got pulled over for "not turning completely into my lane", the cop followed me for 5 miles.

My first was a '48 Dodge Coupe, chopped, de-chromed ,lowered, frenched '54 Pontiac tail lights, louvered hood, but alas a flathead 6cyl. and the worst 6 volt, never did start after Christmas. It really did deserve a 392. And then I discovered girls. Swapped it for a '62 Rambler station wagon.

my first mopar, was an 88 jeep commanche, dont know if you could really call that a mopar. i was pretty big in to mustangs then, shh dont tell anybody. and i remember arguing with this girl in school, who was hardcore mopar, that the 428 cobra jet motor was a hemi . anyway i got out of school joined the navy, wised up a bit, ie no more mustangs, and stumbled onto a 440 727 68 roadrunner painted sublime, i never bought the car, the guy sold it out from under me. after that i was hooked. i just think mopars are the coolest looking musclecars out there and everybody knows there the fastest . plus its fun being "the other guy".

Cool

Are we back on the thread subject now?
My first Mopar was a '68 Plymouth GTX 440 6-pak, 4-speed, 3.54 Dana. I got hit head on by a drunk driver in 1980 and it was totaled. The insurance company replaced it with the '69 Road Runner that I still have today.

First car,68 charger,383hp/auto/3.23 suregrip with 58k miles and purchased from original owner in 1978 at the tender age of 16 for a massive sum of $800. It was all stock except for craiger s/s and L-60-14 mickey thompson rubber. The car was mint inside and out. B-5 blue paint, black top, blue interior(identical to the 68 in "christine"). Here's the kicker; a buddy from high school shows up on my doorstep a month later with his new aquisition, a 1970 challenger 444 six-pack,4 speed,dana-60 car, hemi orange, for which he paid the princely sum of $950. At the time i was extremely jealous! The charger really grew on me and i came to love it more the longer i owned it. Had to sell the chager in the early 80's to pay for college tuition and it killed me to part with that car. While in college i stumbled upon a 69 charger r/t and bought it for $1400 and later sold it for the same amount to a kid who was bugging me on a weekly basis. I figured that lack of time and funds would delay the restoration by years and by then the car would be too far gone to save. That was 13 years ago and that same "kid" still has the '69. Fast forward to 2001 and the search is on for another charger. I start looking on the net and after months find my new car. Guess what,a 68 charger from california and man is it clean; still has factory paint on the frame rails. The original motor is long gone and replaced with a .030 over 440/all the goodies. The car is triple black and will be getting new paint, interior and some performance upgrades as well in the spring. This one i will never sell ! Over the years i've owned many other cars which inluded a 70 442 w-30,1967 mustang coupe,1969 cutlass rocket-350 and various other inferior(to mopar) cars. The 68 charger was my first car and now i am fortunate enough to have found another. Hope ya liked the story and remember if it's not a mopar, why even bother?

My first car was a 1983 Chrysler LeBaron with a 2.2. Soon after that I bought a 1985 Dodge Daytona with a 2.2 L Turbo and an automatic. One month after I bought it I totalled it showing off to a close friend. I had to have another one so I bought a 1984 Chrysler Laser with a 2.2 L Turbo 5 spd. While driving through the backroads one day I came across a 1976 Dodge Aspen R/T and shelled out $450 for it. Not bad considering it ran and had 4 brand new Goodyear Eagle's on it. A year later the Turbo seals blew out of the Laser and I sold it and bought a 1989 Dodge Spirit ES with a 2.5 L Turbo. I still own the Aspen and I am currently restoring it. My daily Mopar driver is a 2001 Dodge Ram Quad Cab 4x4 Off-Road with a 360.

Default Aspen R/T

A pretty rare find. My son had a '78 Volare Super Coupe (Dodge also had an Aspen Super Coupe). I'm not sure if there are any differences between the Super Coupe and the R/T other than trim.

The Super Coupe had 8" rims with big 60's tires, heavy duty suspension, 360 Police package E-58 motor (no more power, but had a windage tray & double roller timing chain) along with the trim package. Cornered like it was on rails. Stock gearing was a wimpy 2.71 or some such, so performance was mediocre. Junior put in 4.10's and hopped the motor unmercifully with 340 big valve heads, wild cam, headers, 750 Holley, etc. Needless to say, the mediocrity was overcome.

Hope your R/T project goes well. They were one of the few bright spots in the bleak automotive panorama of the '70s.

Default My first car

my first car was a 1968 Plymouth Valiant 100 2 door. It had a 74 318 and 904. the best I ever ran with this car was a 15.995 at 85.87 mph. the only mods were a Accel dual point dist., dual exhaust off df 318 manifolds and a hood scoop. It even took me two years of racing every week at fun night to break the 2.76 open geared 7 1/4 rear end.
