You can buy a map at home which shows the world the right way up...
It explains that the Northern Hemisphere being on the lower side is why there is so much more pollution settling there. Come to think of it, you might find that online... |

Yes, we did...
I spent the night parked in his driveway sleeping in my van, we met up first of all in Albuquerque and had lunch together, it was a nice visit. |

Yes indeed it was. It was really good to spend time with Ray. Glad to hear that he made it home safe and sound. Ray gave me you're best. Sorry I'm not on much anymore. I've been little bye little getting weaker. I need to go back to walking the dog, that really helped me feel better. Ray took a few shots of the Javelin. I have some as well, but I have to plug into the USB ports in the back of the puter, and I don't feel like dealing with the rat's nest back there!

Glad to hear you guys had a good visit. My old computer had all the plugins in the back too... I managed to avoid some of the inconvenience by running a couple extensions up to the top of the desk (taped them along the back edge and sorted the wires with cup hooks). I don't think anyone ever anticipates the rat's nest of wires that we end up with behind our computers.

For the first time since I got home I can post on Moparchat...
That's just over six months. I spent a day with David, it was great, we even went to a wrecking yard together in my pursuit of parts for my RAM350 van, I was keen to get bits that might easily get damaged when it got back home and wouldn't be easily replaced here. I also had a new windshield fitted in Albuquerque for the same reason, there might be six or seven of these vans in Australia and such things as this would not be available. I had thought I posted photos of the Javelin... and David... And, after going to Pikes Peak last time, this time I was encouraged by a friend to go to Mount Evans, off the I70 west of Denver. About the same height as Pikes Peak, it features a sealed road that's been that way for about forty years. So it was built to a different standard to the one on Pikes Peak. Narrower, older, crumbling at the edges, more blind corners. I felt the fence-less Pikes Peak road was daunting, but Mt Evans, well, four times I decided to turn around and go back. But I did keep going... and it was worth it... ...but it was more than 'daunting'. it was intimidating. 'Daunting' also applied to a few brief stretches on the road between Ourey and Durango, but I wouldn't have missed that drive for the world, Colorado was the best part of my trip. And that's saying something as I drove 20,242 miles (32,570 kilometres) and through 22 countries. In Europe I used a Peugeot 208 diesel hatch (on a lease). But I have phoned David a few times while I've not been able to get onto Moparchat, the last time about a week ago. He's in hospital... and things aren't looking good. |

Ray, Do you ever come across any AMC vehicles in Australia?

I like that truck! I used to have one like it my friends called the "Creamsicle" due to the color it was much like the one in the picture but a lighter shade of orange. Had a sweet running 318 & no smog equipment. I towed my drag car (open trailer) to many races in the northeast w/ that truck.

We had 660s, Americans, Javelins, Matadors in fair numbers for a while. Today they're rarely seen, but there are enthusiasts who have them. The Javelin model looking like David's, however, was a very rare bird here, right at the end of their 'glory days' here. I can only remember ever seeing two of them, and they were in a big shed with another forty or so Ramblers owned by a collector in Brisbane. |

"660s" or were they called "Ambassadors"?
I think the latter. And there were some Hornets as well, I did a story on little Datsun maybe nine years ago for a classic car magazine, the owner of that car also had a nice Hornet. I might look for photos... |

Nash did have an Ambassador model. I don't remember a 660. Maybe that was the factory designation, or maybe the ones destined for Down Under were 660's. The Ambassador was something Trump might have liked, because it was HUGE. The Ambassadors in the 50's and 60's reminded me of giant bath tubs.

The Classic was the 660, I now recall. One reason Ramblers had good market penetration was that Police used them, and in NSW there were various government departments which had them on their fleet for 'executive' use.

Odd , when I google the AMC Ambassador I get a lot of big 4 doors and station wagons. Most of the ones I saw up here were 2 doors and not bad looking cars, which is odd for farm country. We're usually the ones with all the 4 doors... maybe it was a Canadian thing. I'd post the pic but the site won't let me. Anyone else having probs posting pics?

The Ambassador of the early 50's was a big boat. Actually, to my eye, it looked like a huge (a favorite word of our new chief exec) ugly bath tub. Styling changed in the mid-50's, so it lost the bath tub look but gained no esthetic appeal. I think they ended production of the large Ambassadors in 57, but used the name on upscale versions of the smaller models.

I spoke to David today, he's in a nursing home now...
He is still hoping to be able to get back onto the chemotherapy some time, but it's not happening yet. If anyone would like to write to him, send him a card or similar, the address is: David Young, c/o Horizon Uptown Nursing Home, 7900 Constitution Ave NE, Albuquerque NM 87110 He is also now preparing to sell off his vehicles, including the Javelin. I guess you could send him an offer if you're interested, but otherwise everything will soon be listed on Craigslist Albuquerque. |

Sorry to hear that... for a person that was so active that must be quite a blow. Thanks for including the address.

Still in the nursing home, but his situation has improved just a little, he's able to go back on chemo now.
But the costs have forced him to sell his Javelin, his Skylark and his Vega. He only has his Dodge pickup left and he tells me it's only a matter of time and that will have to go. But he is able to terrorize his fellow 'inmates' on his battery-powered scooter. |

Four months later and I spoke to David again today...
He says things are improving, the chemo has reduced the size of several tumors, in his leg, his lung and others. But his leg has no strength any more. He's working on that. Still in the nursing home, he gets about on a wheelchair and he can walk several steps. His ex-wife is presently using his pickup to clean his stuff out of the yard and house so she can occupy the place the way she wants to. When she's done he's going to get her to park it in the parking lot at the nursing home, but he realises it's too high to get into to drive it himself. Therefore he's looking for a vehicle he might be able to easily get into from his wheelchair, perhaps a 2WD Dakota. He doesn't expect to drive any great distance at any time, but to be able to get out and about will be a tremendous benefit to his condition. All in all it was good to hear him speaking with such confidence even though his home life is likely to always be restricted to the nursing home. And he did want me to pass this on to one and all. |
