Biggrin Best Cam For Street 440

I’m’ building a 440 for a Challenger that will be used almost exclusively on the street. I want it to go as fast as possible, but I don’t want a terrible idle. The 440 has 9.7 to 1 compression and the car has 3.55 gears. What cam do you recommend? Comp, Hughes, Lunati, Mopar or anything el

I have a similar 440 (About 9:1 compression) 4 Speed and 4.10 gears... I went with ported 906 heads and the Hughes HE3038BL cam... (230/236 duration) It idles a little rougher than stock cam but has some kick to it on the top end... I'm very pleased with the performance for a mild motor like mine....

If I had a little more compression I would have moved up to the HE3844BL, but I did want some bottom end...

My .02cents...

I have a comp cam magnum 280 in my 440. It has a very nice idle and I run a 2500 stall with 391 gears. I love it but I drive a little at the track too.

LBS. OF TORQUE, THE CURVE IS AS FLAT AS A POOL TABLE FROM 3500 TO 5500 RPM AND IT IDLES AT 800 RPM IN DRIVE NO PROBLEM!!

I agree with sublime440. The Hughes 230 is a nice cam for the street. It's strong enough without too rough of an idle or being a dog on the low end. My 440's got a Crane 312 cam and it's a bear on the street. I don't think my clutch will last more than a year if I do any decent amount of street driving with it. I've been doing some research and I've settled on replacing it with the Hughes 230. The Hughes also has a good amount of lift for it's duration since it's a chrysler cam.

BTW, I'm also going to step down from my Weiand Team G single plane manifold to the Performer RPM high rise dual plane. This combo should give me a lot more steetabillity.

I would use the Hughes cam also. I have not used one of their BigBlock cams yet, but everyone who has seems to love them and get better performance from them too.

Biggrin Thanks

Thanks for the replies!!! I have ported (by me) 906 heads, have the larger valves, and the springs are the what Hughes recomends for h3038bl because that is the one I was thinking of using. Sublime how does your car idle? Do you have power brakes and do they work with this cam? The more info the better.

Thanks
Sanman

From Farmington... I used to ride my Dirt Bikes out there... I'm From Plymouth/New Hope area....

Car idles like a Champ at 800 RPM...Had a pretty much stock cam in there before and idle quality is pretty close.... I changed over from 516 stock heads (Came on the car, don't know why) and put on some ported 906's with 2.14/1.81 valves... Installed cam with 4 degrees advanced or 106 degree's (Centerline is 110 on those cams I believe)....Running "Hemi 4 Speed" with 8.75 rearend and 4.10 gears.... 1 5/8" Mopar Performance Headers (Kind of small I think but again came with car) .... Edelbrock Performer RPM w/ Holley 850 DP and K&N air filter...(Have 6 pack too... but it slowed the car down a bit so I tried single carb combo for racing) Car picked up a full second in 1/4 mile without second gear (Synchro is out...will pull it this winter.. car shifts fine for normal driving).... Do not have power brakes but I am betting that vacuum is there without a problem.. I talked to Dave Hughes as well and made my choice based on his suggestions... No complaints at all... Car still screams out of the hole and I dropped a tenth off my 60 ft times from the old near stock cam....My '70 Challenger has the non-stopping drum brakes.. which is always an adventure for those emergency stops... actually there not too bad. Car has run a best of 13.41 at Bandimere in Denver WITHOUT second gear... you know 1st to 3rd to 4th when racing.... That's corrected ET value of 12.49 on a 3500 LB car...at around 8.5:1 compression and no second gear... These RB motors are great! First Mopar I ever owned and I'll never go back.. The reason I bought this car in the first place is because I got my butt kicked back in High School by a 70 Challenger and I was running a 70 Firebird with a transplanted 396 Rat Motor...but that's another story...Now I have 2 cars ('72 Cuda and the '70 Challenger)....

Hope you can decipher some info out of my ramblings... Good Luck... Go Vikings..
