Default question for 496 owners

I am considering building a muscle motors kit 496 motor next spring for my 70 bee and would just like a little input from people who have built one or are using one in their cars. What is your combo(cam, heads, intake, and what rpm are your running through the traps? What size of tire do I need to put this torque to the ground? Have you had any problems or are you happy with this combination? Did you use the 440 or 400 block, and how much machine work(grinding) is needed? Sorry about all the questions but I am just trying to get all my ducks in a row and do this thing right the first time. Well thanks for the help and talk to ya later!

I have a Muscle Motors prepped 498 in my 3800lb car. It's an ancient welded 440 crank that I had them lighten when I went to lightweight Ross pistons (measured to 11.6 to 1). The only clearancing required was a little bit on the bottom of each cylinder to allow the rods to clear. I also went with MP Stage VI heads and an Ultradyne .640 mech cam. I have never dynoed the combo but it has run as fast as a 10.79 at 122 (2100 elevation). This is shifting at 5800 rpm and traps at 6800. (need to drop gear down from 4.56 to 4.10). Used to trap at 6200 until I installed a 1050 Dominator. Picked up a bunch and found that strokers love lots of air. Overall I've been very satisified with this combo. Lots of torque at low rpm's will help them last a long time. Whatever head you decide to use, have it worked to match your combo.

We have had a Muscle Motors 440 stroker 493 for four years. It has run flawlessly and we have had no problems. After a freshening at MM this spring, it now makes 742 HP at 6500 and 675 lb/ft of torque at 5400. Our Road Runner runs in the nines at 3400 lbs with driver. You can get all the particuars at our website, www.r3racing.net. Our Avenger has a 596 from MM that also runs great with no problems. We have had no first hand experience with a 400 stoker but are very happy with our existing combination. If you have any questions, just email me and I will do my best to answer you as quickly as I can.

R3, those are some real nice cars your running. I'm hoping to get my Duster in the 9's next season. I met a guy at the track w/496 stroker and he couldn't get out of the 11's. He just started tuning his combo. He was happy w/MM, but wiped out a cam during breakin. I'm stroking the 383 in my show car and adding n20 for some street racing.

Im running a 496 MM kit on my 69 runner It weighs 3750 with me. I have a ultrydine 640/640 Indy 440-1 heads and a 1050 carb. it take a little grinding to clear the rods and I had a 1/2inch pick up tube put in. that also took some grind to clear the rods. compression is 12.05-1. I have ran 10.72@125 on motor and 9.84@139 on a 200hp shot of NOS. I have 410 gears with a 29.5-10.5-15 tire. Just remember when you build such a motor you need a good trans and drive train. go to my web site and it has more on my car Http://hometown.aol.com/rrunnern9/myhomepage/index.html

Fall: Studs, hard block filler, and after market caps hold us together pretty well. Next time we will use a megablock just for extra insurance.
