Edelbrock RPM 440 intake question
Will the Edelbrock 440 Performer RPM intake fit under the stock hood of a 67 Dart with a 440 cu inch in it? I also plan on using the Edelbrock 750 CFM carb. Thanks.

I'm not sure about fit, however, since you don't have the carb yet, either get a real Carter or a Demon. Either of the two are far better than that EB carb.

I have a 74 Challenger w/440 eb performer and it has a T/A hood so the air clnr would clear and that was an e body, I would think that the a body would have a little smaller engine bay

I think you may have clearance problems. It MAY work with a very low drop air cleaner. My buddies '69 Cuda w/ 440 has just enough room for std. Performer w/ 1" drop air cleaner. The Performer RPM is a very high intake.
My 2 cents - get a Holley Street Dominator. It is lower then the RPM, it's small runners give good low end torque, and being a single plane, it will give you more up top. If you are stuck on the Edelbrock Products, the Torq. II is lower then the RPM by quite a bit. I would get the Holley thou, it is a better intake. Mills |

The ultimate question....will the manifold fit. Its really easy to figure it out even when just shopping. Read the info on the following link about hood clearance.
http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/...ral_instr.html Using clay, you can determine how much hood clearance you have with your aircleaner. Then you measure the A/B height of your intake manifold. Look up in the catalogs what the A/B height of the performance intake manifold is, and by the change in height of the manifold and knowing what your clearance is you will know if it will fit or not. The A/B of the 440 Performer RPM is A = 1.90" B = 5.80" |

I have a 440 73 Duster which has a 440 and a Torker II intake, I also use the factory early 70's B/E body duel snorkel air cleaner. I would say its pretty close but no problems. The Performer RPM is a much better intake than the Dominator. It the best street/track intake you can buy. You can have the carb surface milled down if ya want, I have seen it done. It should fit just gotta do some measuring.

I disagree. I'm not taking ANYTHING away from the RPM as it is a truely great peice...the best dual plane available. But I have seen tests on a mild 9:1 440 w/ 509 cam run nearly .5 sec quicker w/ the Street Dominator.
If I could figure out how to attach a pic', I could post the track results of this particular test I'm thinking about. I have no doubts in my mind that the RPM will provide probably about 20+ ft lbs down low, but with a 440, I like to kill off some bottom end to get the car to hook. Once you hit 2500-3000 thou, the Holley will out pull the RPM. my 2 cents... |

If you have the July 2002 issue of Mopar Muscle, there's a article on bb intake dyno blast on page 36 called "Induction Extravaganza". The 440 was a 12.5:1 motor with big cam and valves, so this differs from your combo, but you can probably draw some correlation. RPM (not airgap) max hp - 610.2@6100, max tq - 590.2@4000, avg hp 4000-6600 - 555.9, avg tq - 4000-6600 - 555.4. Street Dominator (ported- slightly unfair) max hp - 636.0@6200, max tq - 598.2@5000, avg hp 4000-6600 - 572.5, avg tq - 4000-6600 - 571.1. Ported to ported the Dominator amy be a touch better, but this is on a radical motor.

The test I was referring to was a track test of a '78 D100 Pickup (4200 lbs) in a certain mopar mag that the name I can't place. I'll try to remember what his combo was best I can: 9:1 440 906 heads - pocket ports w/ stock valves MP 509 Cam 750 Holley 1-3/4" Headers 4.10 rear w/ 3000 stall in 727 He ran the RPM @ a best of 12.59 and 12.05 w/ Holley. He said the RPM stopped pulling @ 5000 while the Holley pulled to 6000. Like I said, this may not be exact, and if I could figure out how to attach a scanned page, you could see exactly what the combo/results were. Depending on what exactly jatczak's combo is, the RPM may be the way to go. But.....I'm sure he won't get it to fit. This is the only reason I suggested the Holley...or even the Torq. II. When you read mag like Car Craft and the test on that fairly mild 440 w/ Edelbrock Heads and RPM intake w/ Comp 274XE cam and see results like 535 HP and 585 ft lbs....you can only assume the RPM is not a bad intake. IIRC, the RPM intake is 7/8 inch taller than the stock intake.
To check for room you can loosely wad up a ball of aluminum foil, place it on top of your aircleaner, lower the hood and measure how much the ball has been squashed. That will tell you how much room you have left to play with. Good Luck |

As the engine tends to raise up on the drivers side, during a hard launch, don't forget to account for that as well.

Thats weird about the fall off at 5000 rpm. My buddy has a 10.5-1 comp 440 with .509 cam and it'll pull 7000 rpm. Ran a tractionless 11.9@118mph in a 3300 pound Dart with 3.91's.That was with the RPM.
That Edelbrock BB shootout showed the torker vs RPM on the 440. The RPM made 50 foot pounds more and HP was very close. What about the M1 intake? |
