Default dipstick tube

After I changed the oil in my 69 RR. I went to check it on the dipstick. It read that it was still low. The dipstick did not seem to be in the right spot. After closer look I found that the dipstick tube was not all the way in the block. Is there as way to remove it and get it into the block the proper depth. And exactly where is the dipstick supposed to be on a 383 engine? I have seem pictures of it between the exhaust manifold and the head and others where it is outside of the manifold.

Just tap the dipstick in carefully the rest of the way. It's a press fit into the block, the bolt on tab, when equipped, is mainly for anti-rattle purposes.
Tap carefully though and don't use a sharp instrument or you'll put a hole or crack in it then you'll get to remove the oil pan and tap it out from underneath next! Dipstick goes to the outside on both the 383s on my 68 Roadrunner and 63 300.

confirm that you have the correct tube. Some are longer, measured from the botttom to the swaged stop ridge. If the hole in the block is the same dimension as the dipstick tube, tap it in. If not, cut the tube to fit the hole.

A handy tool for driving the tube into the block is a 3/8" crows foot wrench at the end of a long extension, it will fit around the tube and bear on the top of the stop ridge; use a hammer and drive it down to the stop ridge.
