Help Oil Pan Woes

OK, so I'm confused here. Can someone please explain the exact differences between a 360 and 318 pan? Here's the situation.

I'm swapping a magnum 318 from a truck into my 73 scamp. The truck oil pan is rear sump, so I ordered the center sump package and gasket from Summit Racing.

now I'm in the shop trying to put the new pan on, and the rear seal is the same size as the front (they are both large). On the pan I took off, the front seal is large, and the rear is smaller. Did I recieve a 360 pan by mistake? Am I making some stupid mistake? The gasket set came with three seals... two large ones and one smaller one. I can't seem to find a way to get it on there and sealed.

HELP!

The difference between the 360 pan and the 318 pan is that the rear oil seal is smaller on the 360. So you got the pan that you ordered, it's the engine that is wrong!

Dude, that's either the sorriest attempt at an April Fools joke or you aint gotta clue what a 318 and a 360 looks like and should not be working on engines.

Don't quote me, but I don't think a magnum pan fits on a non magnum block anyway, I could be wrong.......
Also, the magnum gasket is one piece, you orderd a 318 pan gasket, not a 318 magnum one.
And, you have a 360, look on the side of the block, it will tell you.

The 318 Magnum engine has a smaller rear pan seal then the LA 318. Another Chrysler breakthrough. Dan

Cut me a little slack man, this is my first big project. I'm only 17 and I gotta learn somehow. I remembered that the 360 and 318 pans were different, but I couldn't remeber which was the smaller/larger rear seal.

Well everything I know about the truck (including badges on the body) told me that it was a 5.2 Magnum... I inherited the truck from my dad, and he didn't say anything about an engine swap... but I suppose anything is possible. What should I look for on the block to tell me its a 5.9 Magnum (360)?

Or is it true that all Magnums have the smaller rear seal? If so.. where can I get a center sump Magnum pan?

I was thinking this was an option but wanted to make sure it fit rather than just get another pan that wouldn't fit. Anyone else done this?

I did a few like that. You have to fill the notches in the front of the pan where the LA gasket has the rubber pieces that go through the pan.Use RTV and make sure you fill the void so no oil can leak past the timing cover. Just do not use so much that it will run into the engine. You will also have to use the LA pickup tube and screen that was used with the pan. Install the pan using the service manual proceedure with the four 5/16 studs to align the gasket and pan. Dan
