Default Differences between 1500 and 2500

I am curious about the diffs between these 2. Mainly related to overall size and weight. I'd like to get a 4x4 and I'd really like the 5.7 hemi. I understand the 5.7 won't be in the 1500 for anywhere from mid 2003 to 2004.

I won't tow much with the truck, maybe a pop up camper a couple times a year.

thanks

Well, the main difference between the frames of the '02 1500 and '02 2500 is that the 1500 has a hydroformed frame, meanin it is completely enclosed-4sided. The '02 2500 has the old 3-sided box style frame. The back half or so of the 2500 frame is 8 inches tall-I think, and the 1500 is 6 inches tall-again I think. The rear springs are heavier and have more leafs on the 2500's. They also have an 8-bolt wheel pattern compared to the 5 bolt 1500.

The new '02 1500 has an independant front suspension while the current '02 2500 AND the soon-to-come redesigned '03 2500 have a solid axle front suspension. As for weight difference, the 2500's are approximately 500 pounds or so heavier than the 1500's, again that's just a guesstimate.

The overall size of the 1500 and 2500 is identical other than an increase ride height in the 2500 because of heavier spring rates. Remember, the 2500 is built for heavy duty applications and it's ride and weight reflect that.

Personally I would wait for the Hemi to become available in the 1500's simply because of the lighter weight and also they will ride a little better than the '03 2500's. I would guess the Hemi will become available in them sometime next year, hopefully in the first half. I could be wrong, but I hope I'm not
You will be much happier with the ride quality if you can wait a little longer for the Hemi to become available in the 1500's. For one thing it will have just a wee bit more performance in the 1500 because it is lighter.

Good luck

The ride quality in a 2500 is not good but that thought never crossed my mind when I got mine. Keep in mind the 2500 is deisgned to carry almost twice the weight of a 1500 (rate wise). Things have to be stronger. For instance the diesel can pull a lot more than the 4.7L. You want a truck with a big axel and strong transmission to handle that. With some of the stock trailers I've seen on the interstate a 1500 isn't going to handle them as well or as long. I've seen some 5th wheels that will make a 3500 squat.......That is where your 2500/3500 series trucks come in. If you are looking for a more heavy duty engine or maybe something that can carry a lot of weight in the bed then that is the kind of truck you want. I am still surprised that dodge supposedly isn't going to offer the 5.7L1500 truck. That is a shocker. If they do, and you dont' do a lot of HD stuff you're better going with one of those.
