demon 72 ,71 340 carb
Does anyone know what type (name) of 4 barrel carburator came stock with a 1971 demon 340 engine? I have a hood scoop, with two holes on the bottom . The j heads, were they stock for the 71 engine? The car is late nov. 1971 but considered a 72.

J heads with 2.02 valves are stock. The stock carb is a Carter Thermoquad rated at 800 cfm. You can still get them from Advance auto for one. Holley builds them with all noew parts now. The hood scoops were never hooked up to anything.

DW's correct, the two holes were never hooked up to anything. These indicate your car had the twin scoops hood and not the dual snorkel, single sccop hood.
Strange really because most "late" 71's had the latter style hood. |

my mistake, it does have a dual snorkel(connected) Are the holes then for show or ventilation? So no weird hook up for the snorkel to the carb?

THey add a little fresh air under the hood, but there is nothing to connect to the air cleaner.

You will not find the '71 340 one year only air metered T.Q. carb at an auto parts store. These are scarce carbs and were often replaced with a '72 340 solid fuel metered T.Q. carb. The '71 340 Demon used the twin Super Bee/Coronet R/T hood scoops while the '72 340 Demon used the optional twin snorkle single hood scoop. The '72 340 scoop option hood had two holes closer togther than the '71 twin scoop hood. Also the build date you indicated is a '72 model that used the 'J' or 915 1.88" intake valve heads while the '71 340 'J' head used a 2.02" intake valve. If you try to order a rebuilt T.Q. carb from an auto parts store, it is likely that you will get a poor performing smogger carb! |

Just through the '74 model year, there was a total of 16 different models used
and about double that figure from '75 through '85(this includes the SuperQuad replacement 800 cfm carbs)models. The carbs changed physically and internally year by year. It is crucial to get the correct carb for your application no matter what brand it is! |

hood and springs
Hi all just reading this thread and wondering if i should buy the super stock springs for my 71 demon I am in the process of selling the car and it is soft in the rear end, has new mopar shocks. Also demon 72 my 71 has the scoop like yours, i always thought it was 72 scoop, and hood, never thought when the car might have been built. Thansk Tim

My car has the twin snorkle single hood scoop. It has the 72 body style although it was made in nov of 1971. The holes are close together in the hood. so the carter 4 bbl carb was the original? and no other hook up for the twin snorkle?

Sept. '71 build dates up to 12 '71 are considered '72's and they are titled as such. Your car has the correct scoop and hood. And the Carter Thermoquad is the original carb for your 340. From '71 and up the Thermoquad is stock on all 340 and 360 engines and when the 318 went to a 4bbl engine it got the same Thermoquad as well. |
