cylinder sleeves
I had an extra 340 block sitting in the garage for a few years. Had it all greased up and covered after I bought it. It had some rust in #5 cylinder but I didn't think it was too bad. I decided to pull it out and clean it up and I took it to the machine shop today. Got bad news. Cylinder was pitted. I was told it probably would not even clean up at .040. They suggested a sleeve. Is it worth sleeving a cylinder? Will it hold up?

If done correct it won't hurt anything. Watch out for shaddy machine shops that tell you things are bad and will get rid of the bad parts for you! I lost a forged crank to a bad shop that ended up using it in one of their motors, found out from a buddy where my crank went.

I would ask them to try that cylinder at 0.040" and see if it does clean up...
If it does, it simply determines that this is how far you rebore the whole block. If not, they can keep going till they can get a sleeve in, I think they come at about 0.090" don't they? Maybe not, maybe 0.090" over standard, then they can machine it the same as the other bores need. |

Hello all, After a search on the forum, I too have a 340, this one with a 1.5" hole in the side of the cylinder at the water jacket.
Can this be sleeved as well? If so, where can I get more info on sleeves? A photo is coming soon of my "issue". Ralph |

I wouldn't make a decision without an ultrasound test of the cylinder wall thickness.

I raced a 427 Ford with seven cylinder sleeves. My last early Hemi build had five…
