Question

I have a new Holley 650 on my 383 Road Runner and I have a problem I can't figure out. The idle takes a long time (about 30 sec or more) to come down to an 800 rpm idle from about 1500rpm. It will come right down if I let the clutch out some and load the engine a little. Then it idles at 800 rpm fine. Any thoughts would be great???

It sounds like your power valve is having a hard time transitioning to the idle circuit. Does the motor have a performance cam? If so, you will probably need to install a power valve with a lower vacuum number. If your cam is stock or very mild, check and re-check for vacuum leaks.

To insure you have the right power valve, hook up a vacuum gauge and take a reading at idle. You should buy a power valve with a number that is 1.5 - 2 points below your idle reading.

SUGGEST THE FOLLOWING,CHECK FOR VACCUM LOSS,POSSIBLE BAD POWER VALVE BUT MORE LIKELY PLUGGED OR DIRTY IDLE AIR BLEEDS LOOK IN PRIMARY AIR HIRN FOR THE 4 BRASS BLEEDS CLEAN WITH CHOKE/CARB CLEANER,LASTLY CHECK THE DISTRIBUTER ADVANCE ,PROBABLY STICKING OR TOO QUICK.

What about the air fuel mixture? Maybe a little rich.

Well, I just adjusted it a few weeks ago. Adjusted them in all the way and came out two turns. Then adjusted each of them out till the idle was at max without loss in RPM (adjusted the RPM down each time). Kept doing this until I could not get anymore increase in RPM. I think I may have screwed this up, It's been some time sense I adjusted a carb so, I used the adjusting instructions that was in the box. Some of my experience came back but adjusting them out till the rpm peaked was not part of my old days.

I think this may be a power valve problem as taryan pointed out but, not sure. I have a 292 MP cam and my VAC is only 15 inch's at best.
Hummmm

I got a set up from I think JC Whitney, you put an O2 sencer in the exhaust and you plug this device into it and the battery. After it warms up, it'll tell you if it's rich or lean, then adjust carb as necessary. I think it runs about $40 for the O2 sencer, and like $60 or so for the reader. I also use it for friends vehicles also.

Question

DEPENDING WHAT 650 HOLLEY YOU HAVE THE FLOAT MAY BE ADJUSTABLE FROM THE TOP OF THE PRIMARY BOWL.MOST 650'S COME WITH A 6.5 POWER VALVE WHICH SHOULD NOT BE AN ISSUE UNLESS IT HAS BACK FIRED OR COUGHED THROUGH THE CARB.IF,YOU HAD LITTLE OR NO IDLE ADJUSTMENT THEN MOST LIKELY IT'S THE PV.
