Help A727 help

what are the options that come on a A727 transmission? I need a new transmission to go with a 340 and 8.75. that will give me power and good fuel economy on the highway. Any suggestions of what to look for?

What options are you looking for. I believe stock trannys didnt really vary much outside of amount of stall and a Hemi kick down lever. Other than adding a deeper pan, it's all mods from here.

The options include: low first gear, high ratio band apply lever, 4 gear and straight cut gear planetaries (quite expensive), 5 clutch drums, and most important to your economy question is lock up converter which I believe was first available in the 78 production year? Anybody else see something to add?

Default these option are aftermarket

the before mentioned options are available thru A&A transmision. If you want fuel economy and a low ratio cheap buy a 904 it's lighter and has 30lbs less spinning weight. When properly built will handle more horse power than the 340 will ever make. Talk with A-1 protrans they are runing these trannies with 904 guts behind record setting comp elliminator car and Hemi super stockers.

I already have the 904 and suspect its had its share of mods but i don't know what to look for or what the difference is between the 904 and the 727. Is there anything i have to adjust going from the 318 to the 340 in the transmission??. It doesn't seem to a;ways shift properly. I only know by looking at restoration manuals the A727 went with the 340 from the factory. can any one explain like i'm a two year old what the actual difference is?

The A-904 is an overall smaller transmission. The easy way to tell them apart from the novice point of view is the pan. The A-904 pan looks like a square with one corner cut off at an angle very similar to a GM 350 trans. The 727 pan has a distinct "dog ear" on the corner of the pan where the dipstick is located. The 727 also has larger and heavier internals which stand lots of abuse but also consume horsepower by their nature. Remember the "Clutch Flite" was basically a poor mans Lenco and is still an real neat setup. Modern technology and materials have made the 904 an attractive option and should easily survive your street application.

Default 904 mods

I'll bet your tranny is mostly stock maybe a shift kit at best. Absolutely positively the best thing you can do to your tranny is put a good valve body like a Cheetah from turbo action it cost in the neighborhood of $125. Next is the torque converter if it is cheap you will have cheap results. Turbo Action, TCI, Dynamic, COAN, and what I use now PTC are good converters look for a low percentage of slip for bettter efficiency.

cap 14, generally smaller converters have higher stall speeds.

Good for launch, but not as good for economy, ect. Smaller converters also run hotter, so they're not as good for towing, ect.
