Bored and stroked 5.9?
I've never actually torn into a magnum engine before, and I was wondering a few things. How many cubes could you get from a Magnum engine? What do you suppose the maximum bore and stroke you could have in one? Anybody have a clue?

FYI
There are stroker kits out for the 360 that will give you 406 c.i. or 408 c.i. if you bore it out for slightly larger pistons.
http://www.hughesengines.com/index.asp even has a 416 c.i. - look under October 23. |

Good question, I have always wanted to know that also. Would it be to difficult or even possible to bore and stroke a 360, supercharge it and spray it. That would be pretty sick. What do you guys think low 12's on an Indy.

360 Magnum block with the 4" crank at .020=406 cid
At .030=408 cid A 340 block at .030=416 cid The crank is cheap u/$300 Good Rods $450-750 Forged pistons $500-750 The performance is awesome! |

How much hp gain is there from a stock 360 to a 408ci?
Also whats the largest a 318 can convert to...350ci?? |

I heard somewhere the 318 has thin cylinder walls and can't be bored a lot. Now, the bored and stroked 360 will last forever and then some and has tire killing toque. A bored and stroked 318 (if it can be done) would be the same. now, if you just stroke the 318....you'd notice.

The 318 has 3.91" bore and 3.31" stroke. The 360 has 4" bore and 3.58' stroke. You may not be able to punch out a 318's bore as much, but you stand to gain a lot by increasing the stroke. I'd like to know if a crank w/a 4" stroke would work in a 318? That would give you 384 cu.in. with standard bore!

That's a great question
We need some Mopar techs.
384 stroked 5.2L. We need to know if a 4" stroke would run in a 5.2. I know alot of Dak owners that didn't wanna spring for the R/T package so they could only get the 5.2. They would probably be very happy with this. Crap, alot of RAM owners would prolly be happy with this. I wonder how it would fair against a Chebby 383 stroker. Those are some torque beasts. |

I'm not a Mopar Tech, but the 318-340 use one size crank journal and the 360 another. The factory 340 crank will drop right in the 318, so the 4" crank for the 340 should work just fine. Since the stroke increase in the 318 will be more than the 360 I'm sure there will be more major block grinding and maybe this might be the fit problem. There are off the shelf pistons for the 360 now, but you might have to have them made for the 318. Cost $600-750. Since we have thin wall blocks I would not worry about going to a larger overbore than necessary. I would rather have a thicker clyinder wall. On a 360 the difference between std and .030 is only 6 cubic inches.

Heres the problem
The Magnum family of 3.9, 5.2 & 5.9 are recommended for a maximum bore of 0.020 and at mopar the newer Magnum piston come with the Rods on them. The are only avaible in Std., 0.010, and 0.020 sizes.
With that said, heres the trick to increased cubes in the magnum. You will need to use a piston from an older application. This will allow you to gain displacement by increased bore. Be aware that the older styled piston has a larger groove for the Oil Control Ring resulting in of'course a bigger oil ring. My 318 is Bored 0.030. it gives me 323 Cubes. I doubt it will last more than a year or two. My dyno numbers are below. You can get more horsepower out of a 318 but the torque fiqures was what I was after. This is as far as I could go on the cam grind and still operate on the Mopar HP PCM. Note: I designed the camshaft for this engine and Comp Cams grinded it. |

Opps forgot to mention....
My next engine will be a 5.9L 360 Block @ max bore. Special application Clevite Bearings to use a 340 crank and 340 pistons.
I will also be using a little less radical cam. Note: I do get an average of 14.5 - 15 mpg. with the 318 now. |
