Default 8 3/4 axle shaft lengths,splines,pinon sizes?

Hi Can anyone explane sizes, lengths and types of parts found in the 8 3/4 rearend and where they would be found? I'm not trying to start the old common 741 vs 742 case type arguments. Where for instance would you find a 30 spline axle vs a 35 spline axle? What are the common b body axle shaft lengths? U joint pinon sizes?Number of teeth under u joint pinon? Differences in number of clutches, springs, plates etc in each type of posi and what parts interchange in all case sizes?strongest parts vs weaker and where each is used. Thanks Tim

Hey Tim
Did you want catchup with that?
Man, When You ask ,You ask.
I can`t answer all those questions .
But I will tell you what I know of your questions.
First of all the 8 3/4 came with a 28 spline axle not the 30 or 35.
You may or may not find an aftermarket spool or something of that nature splined that way.
The same aplies to the axles.
(U Joint pinion ) size??
mopar used 2 differant Ujoint The larger of the 2 were comonly used in the performance modles and police cars as well as some
trucks.
As for the actule diamiter of the pinion shaft were the yoke slips on.
Again there were 2.
1was a fine spline and one was a course spline.
The 489 case is the stongest setup.
As it has the larger pinion diamiter as well as larger bearrings through out the assembly.
As for B-body axle lenght .
There were 2 of them as well.
I don`t recall the exact year they changed them .
But 73 comes to mind.
Perhaps someone else could help clarify that point.
Sorry I couldn`t be more specific with out going to the parts pile.
But perhaps this will be of some help anyway

Sorry Dan but the factory 8 3/4" axle has never come in any other spline count but 30.

Pinion splines are either 10 or 29 and can be identified externally by the hex size of the nut. A 10 spline pinion will have a 1 1/8" nut and the 29 spline will have a 1 1/4" nut.

8 3/4" axle shaft lengths measured from the tip of the splined end
to the outside of the flange:

A BODY
'66-'72= 27 11/16"

B BODY
'65-'67= 28 7/8"
'68-'70= 29 3/16"
'71-'74= 30 5/8"
'71-'73 wagon= 31 21/64"

C BODY
'65-'69= 30"
'70-'71= 30 5/8" (Chrysler & Fury)
'70-'73= 31 21/64" (and '69 wagon)

IMPERIAL (Large Bolt Pattern)
'65-'66= 30 1/8"
'67-'69= 30 5/16"
'70-'71= 29"
'72-'73= 31 7/16"

E BODY
'70-'74= 29 31/32"

A100
'65-'70= 30"

D100
'65-'71= 31 1/8"
'72-'74= 31 21/64

Thanks for fielding that John. I still haven't had much of a chance to get the diagram updated. Still trying to figure out how to get all of that information to fit on one page.

I may just have to build a second page to show the extra information that wasn't originally covered.
