Tranny swapps
Anyone know what serial #'s to look for to find an A500 aod to put behind a 360 MPchassis book says one behind 3.9l v6 will work but they don't give you identifying things to look for #'s characteristics, etc... Please help I'm out of gear and don't want to change ring & pinion or tire size?

The tip off is the pan. The 904 and the 500 are the same tranny with the same pans. The MoPar 4spd auto's are a regular 3 spd with the tail removed for the overdrive unit.
The 727 and the 518 are just like the 904/500 tranny's. You can find them in trucks preety easy. |

You can get a lot of help from the MoPar Chassis book on the trannys.
The 4spd tannys differ in looks from the 3spds in that the do not have a skinny tail end. |

E hostler,
I'm still reading on the 518, but I'm putting this behind a 360 not a big block and wanted the 500 because of the quicker first gear do you have anything on the 500 I already have the chassis book but it doesn't cover much on the 500 except buying one |

Dodgeman;
What exactly is it your looking for? We did describe the tranny as looking just like a 904 but with a fat tail. The fat tail is the overdrive unit. Look in trucks for the tranny. You know the tranny is new, but the Chassis book should be telling you the earliest years they were made and those are the non-lock up units for the most part. MoPar has Lock up converters if you can't find a non-lockup tranny. Serial numbers , for the most part, are for tieing in that tranny to that truck. There are probably numbers on it for ID purposes, but I can't help there. Sooorrry. |

Ok thanks alot
I'll start digging around, From what I read so far it looks like the 1994 is the best one to go with because of the upgrades, would that be right? |

I can't say this year or that one. The earlier the better due to the tranny not being a lock up. If thats what you want.
It's closer to the 904 than later years. The newwer units are more refined making other performance upgrades harder due to the changes inside. Tranny guys step up! |

For any kind of retrofit you want a pre '96 trans. On the pre '96 units the OD and the LU converter can be controlled with simple electrical connections but starting in '96 the OD was computer controlled.

If I were doing this conversion, I would go with the 518 and beef up it's internals with those of a 618. |

I thanks for the info on the 518 vs the 500 but the 500 does have the quicker 1st gear, will it stand up to a 360 on the street? How about the mopar sells vs building one? I was looking at the 500 so I could keep a relatively num lowwer gear for the highway and get better pull off the line. |

The one MoPar sells is of course, brand spankin new. It is also stock as a rock. If you purchase one from the junk yard, it should be subject to a total rebuild and the performance mods you want to included in it.
The 500 can take the 360. It's just like a 904 in it's front half. So build accordingly. Same with the 518. (727) |
