big block crank question?
Are 383 and 400 cranks directly interchangeable or are there balancing problems or something i might not be thinking about?

383 cranks are forged & internally ballanced. 400 cranks are cast & externally ballanced. You can use a 383 forged crank in the 400 but you will have to get the whole assembly, (crank, pistons & rods) rebalanced. You will need to have the harmonic balancer from the 383 as well. If an automatic trans is used you may need to remove some balance weights from the convertor If your using a manual trans. you will need a different flywheel. The forged 383 crank is the better piece, & can be used in a 400 (Stroke & bearing sizes are the same.)

yes also beware, there were a couple years of cast 383 cranks, and there were a very few 400's with steel cranks..

What rampage said, in the case of the 383 and 400 cast cranks both need the same amount of external balancing. The forged 383 and the forged 400 are a direct interchange.
