I agree. Real pricey. Biggest advantage is weight savings in both unsprung mass and rotational mass too.

Are driveshafts really considered unsprung mass? At both ends, they're connected to components that are certainly supported by the car's suspension. I've always thought of "unsprung mass" in terms of things like wheels and brake components, because they're not held up by the car's suspension.

What does a drive shaft hold up?

Half of it is considered unsprung weight since it moves with the rear axle. So, if it weighed 10 lbs. only 5 lbs. would be considered unsprung weight.

It does not hold up anything, but it is attached to the rear axle and halof of it's weight is considered unsprung weight, just like half your lower and upper control arms are considered unsprung weight.

Just a little worthless trivia here but ford aerostars used to use an aluminum driveshaft with the same size u joints as my dart and most chrysler stuff. It is about 3 inches to long for an a body but it may work for a different body style. Cheap also. Granted it isnt going to be strong enough to stand up to a KB hemi or something but in a mild small block car it should be ok.

Ford Motorsports sells an aluminum driveshaft for the Mustang (5.0's anyway) for about $150. It's nowhere near long enough for me to use in my truck, but if you're looking for a short shaft for a small chrysler, you might try that.

Cost is the only real issue, and for the benefits you get from it...its worth it.

DRIVE, a free rag you get at carwashes has an add for AL driveshafts from 300 and steel ones from 289.00, dont know why you would want a steel one for the difference.
