Default dipstick tube

After I changed the oil in my 69 RR. I went to check it on the dipstick. It read that it was still low. The dipstick did not seem to be in the right spot. After closer look I found that the dipstick tube was not all the way in the block. Is there as way to remove it and get it into the block the proper depth. And exactly where is the dipstick supposed to be on a 383 engine? I have seem pictures of it between the exhaust manifold and the head and others where it is outside of the manifold.
