Default Too much Piston/Wall clearance ?

Hi @ all,

I´m building a strip/street 383 for my coronet by myself. I bought a set of 0.030 dome pistons from federal mogul. The machine shop bored and honed the cylinder walls to the dimension for a 4.250+0.030 piston + clearance. Now I´ve seen that on one piston stands that it is just 4.752" an not 4.280" like the other ones. Could it cause an Engine failure due to the more clearance which that piston have?

Thanks in forward

greetings J

hello, the piston always has the clearance built into it. in other words, a 4.280 bore minus piston skirt dia.= total clearance. the pistons should measure .001 t o.0035 smaller than bore size. some piston manufacture's measure at different spot on skirts. I would check with instructions before assembling. make sure what you have is enough. a .001 to much is far better than .001 too little. just food for thought.

I am perplexed by the original comment "an not 4.280" like the other ones", a +.030" 383 piston should never measure 4.280", there would be zero clearance.

ok, I thought by 0.030 over pistons I just have to take the original bore plus the 0.030 to get the dimension of the pistons. But it makes more sense that the bore is 4.280 and not the piston. I dilivered the block with a piston and the instructions from Federal mogul about the clearence. Then I think its all right with my pistons and the clearance schould be ok.

Thx for your help

Regards Jan
