Unhappy I need a 340 rod, please help

I am rebuilding a 340 and one of my rods is bent. The machine shop called their supplier to get one and the one they have listed is much less heavy duty (almost 70 g lighter in small end) then the one I need.
Does anyone know where I can find one like I need? The part no. is 2899496 on the rod I need. Any info would really be appreciated.

Default 340/360 Rods

From the engines I've pulled apart, the 340 rod is basically the same forging as the 360 and 318 cast iron crank forgings. The forging number may be different though. The 340 rod was bushed, but your machine shop should be able to take a 360 rod and install the bushing.

The 273/318 forged crank rods were much smaller and lighter. They had the bushed pin ends though. It sounds like your shop is looking at the 273/318 rod.

Mr_340

The ones I have out of a 69 block are definately a heavier forging.
The small block books I have said that there were two rods. I think that the shop did get in a 360 or cast crank 340 rod, but its too small to balance the rest with.

Does anyone recognize the casting number?

Wink 340 Rods

I'll see if Gary has any extra rods. He lives in the Austin area and has pulled apart several trashed 340s, so maybe he has some extra rods laying about. I finally got in touch with him. He was having some trouble with his ISP.

Pro, are you sure its the right type? Everyone I've talked to at, Hughes, Muscle Motors, Mazzolini....they have rods that are so much lighter then the ones I have. Did Mopar make HD rods? Mine are fully 40 grams heavier then the 340 ones Hughes had with the same forging number on it.

I don't get it. Did they make stronger ones for 6pack or TAs?

If I can't find one to match soon, I might take you up on your offer. Thanks Pro.

Default 340 Rod

That looks like a standard 340 rod to me. Direct Connection used to make a HD NASCAR rod with 7/16" rod bolts instead of the normal 3/8". No, my friend Gary works for a Mobil Home dealership. I'll send him a note and give him your e-mail address. 40g is a ton of weight (1.5 oz.) Still sounds like a 273 rod to me. The early 360 rods have a forging number of 3418645.

Forging #s for rods
360 - 3418645
340 - 3418645
318 cast crank - 3418645
318 steel crank - 1618699
318 Poly - 1618699
273 - 2406782

These numbers came directly off the rods setting on my desk right now. The 2406782 and the 1618699 are both the smaller forging. I can't weigh them as my scales are gone!

Thanks for your help guys, I haven't found one yet, but from what I now understand, I just have stock 340 rods for a forged crank, that are as of yet un-cut/balanced. The part number is correct for that part.

I need to find one thats appears uncut, from an odd # piston (so the oil goes in the right direction) .....does that sound right, or does it really not matter?

Billy, better add my part # to your list as a stock 340 rod.

Mr 340, still haven't heard from your friend Gary yet, but would like to. Even if I can borrow one to check the shops scales, I'm beginning to have my doubts as to its accuracy.

I haven't gotten an e-mail back from Gary yet. I'll try to call him tonight. The 496 rod was in the early 340s. The later rod looks the same to me. E-mail your address again, I've lost it somehow.

Plum Crazy Chris: An easier way to check the calibration on the shop scale than to send a rod back and forth in the mail is to get a bunch of nickles and pile them on one at a time and look at what they weigh. Each nickle is 5.0 grams. Pile on enough to make 140 grams (you do the math). This will check the accuracy in the range that you are using.

PCC,sorry it took me so long to get back to you but.......the rod that seems to be the heaviest out of what I have is the 645(340)rod at 751 grams,is this anywhere close to what yours weigh? my 496s are lighter at 715 grams,let me know what yours weigh I can get a hold of many other rods for 340s,Im sure we can find the right one...........PRO.......

My shop tells me that mine are 789g total, 528g big and 261g small ends. The bent full floating pin, rod is for the #1 piston.

That really seems like a huge difference in weight.... I'm going to have to check the shops scale.
