Question Cam lift

I have a stock 340 cam in my duster and would like to upgrade my cam. Is it the lift you have to worry about, as far as making contact with piston with valves. I've never been sure about this.

If you have an early, high compression 340, you can easily use a cam of 280 total degrees and as much as .480" lift without clearance problems. More than that will require that you at least check piston to valve clearance. But if you do run a bigger cam than that, the engine will not like it as much as the smaller cam anyway. If you have the later, lower compression motor, don't put in a much bigger than stock cam because it will just make the motor even lazier than it allready is..............djs

When you are concerned about p-to-v clearance, duration can be a factor, since the valve stays open longer, at higher lifts than a stock cam would be at the same piston position. It's best to check after a cam swap, since the cost of a dial indicator is cheap compared to a dropped valve!!!

Good if you already have the heads off, but hard to get in and out of the spark plug holes if you're only doing a cam swap!

True so true.

Just install the cam and see if it hits. Then take the risk it has the recomended clearance.
