What engine and tranny? Those things always help.

My guesses would be (in no particular order) - a separated harmonic balancer, missing balancing weights on an externally balanced engine, added weights on an internally balanced engine, torque converter not balanced, something amiss on the pump inside the transmission.

Could even be loose bolts on either the flex plate to crank or torque convertor

Have you been driving the car without any problems and did this just start?

ok im going to try to answer all three answers i got all at once here goes i have had the car 4 months now and it was doing this from the start its a L engine code 383 auto and im guessing a 727a not sure though have not got under it yet although i know the tranny has been rebuilt and there was a torque conv. in the trunk that looks new no scratches etc. but can the torque conv. cause the shake when sitting in park.

Some '70 and '71 383's have cast crankshafts which require external balance, if a cast crank isn't externally balanced it will vibrate.

Could it be something as simple as a pooched motor or tranny mount?

A '71 L code 383-2 with an automatic would have come with a cast crankshaft, if the transmission was rebuilt and a neutral balanced converter installed that's probably the source of your vibration.

Remove the dust cover from the bottom front of the transmission converter housing and turn the converter until the drain plug is visible. The external weights should be welded to the face of the converter on either side of the drain plug. If there are no weights that's the likely source of your vibration.

Just to clarify, it's not JUST the steering wheel vibrating, right? It's the entire car?

Had the same problem in a 4-banger: bad sparkplug. Not sure if that issue can translate to an 8 cylinder.
