Default Any good place to start in diagnosis??

Original owner of 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 Quad cab V-10 4x4 with 116K miles. Recently noticing that when placed down in 4-wheel drive low range the transmission(47RE i think) won't shift into 3rd gear or overdrive, but low and second are ok.....you can even almost run it up into the rpm limiter and it won't go over into third. Put it back in regular 2 wheel drive and the transmission shifts perfectly. Seems to shift ok in 4 wheel drive high range. Tranny fluid level is in the normal range and as far as I can tell it actuates 4 wheel drive as it should. You think this would turn out to be a main computer problem?? thanks for any input.

I don't mean to sound dumb. But should it go into OD in 4lo? I only ask because i've never been out of 2nd in 4lo in my dakota.

Is this a new problem? Or something you just noticed? Being a electronically shifted transmission it may not allow it to shift into 3rd, or OD. The owners manual may talk about what gears are allowed in Low range.

I'm thinking that maybe you aren't able to go fast enough to get a 3rd gear shift in low range. Definitely not a OD shift. Especially with a V10 considering the redline is low on those engines.

If the computer doesn't see a certain speed it inhibits an upshift?

My Dakota won't do a OD shift until 45mph.

I don't honestly know, but if it shifts normally in 2wd I would consider it normal operation.

And the answer to the question of the place to start diagnostics is.

Finding the description and operation of the system.

Then checking for codes and service bulletins.

I've ran about 45mph in four wheel drive low range(with my 3.55 gearing) pulling a heavy trailer for many miles in the truck's earlier life.

Currently working on re-seating the plastic electrical plugs on and around the 47re trans but unable to remove the large round black main plug just above the pan rail on the driver's side. Don't know if I need to insert a small screwdriver into one of the li'l slots on the plug itself as i'm not able to get to the sides of the plastic plug where one normally pulls out a portion of the plug to get the plug to release from the sensor. Guess I have two nicks going on here....sorry bout that. Truck still shifting flawlessely through all four gears in 2 wheel and 4 wheel high range. 118K miles now and the fluid and tranny filter has been changed three times and had a cooler put on it a long time ago. Adjusted the bands once.
