Wish I could, our local track has a no aluminum head rule, thus effectively banning most Mopars and imports. How archaic. Most of the local racers run pinto powered mustangs. Would love to join the fun, maybe one day they'll wake up. It's almost like they have a flatheads only rule, lol.

Question

Hey, I could use any setup info or tips you've got on FWD racing. I set up a new FWD class for our track this season. No one here has any experience with it.

The track's a mildly banked quarter mile dirt. Starts out heavy and goes dry slick in the mains (Nevada summers).

The rules are written as a pure stock class with no engine modifications. Four cylinder only (no turbos, no multi-port injection). What do you do to the chassis to get them to work well? Are CV joints and half shafts reliable? I'm thinking of putting an '84 or so 024 together for my nephew. Any tips?

Hey Rich33

First of all these cars tend to push. What we found to work on a 3/8 track is to use light springs on the front, heavy on the rear. Toe set at 1/16 to 1/8 out. We cut out one coil on the left front spring to lower it. Remove the front sway bar. Just before you enter the turn, lift off the throttle and tap the brake to set the car. Immediatly get back on the gas. If the car starts to push up any, just touch the brake with your left foot to loosen it back up. Keep your foot on the gas. Left foot braking is a major key to fast cornering. If you still have a problem with a push, you can change the toe on the rear also. I hope this helps.

Hey Mopar

Great info on the site you reccomended, I'm wondering if removing the front sway bar would help on asphalt, I'm going to make a note of that and try it this spring. Looks like you've been doing your homework! Wich of the driver's at4m.net race Dodges in the mini stock tech area? great site by the way, thanks for recomending it. Rich as far as drive train goes for you, I've found that using a caravan transaxle with the 385 final drive really helps get rpm up and also helps with back pressure in allowing the car to "break free" upon corner entry. On our track I use an Omni GLH tranny with a 387 final and my brother uses a caravan 385, both of us run 3rd gear and we turn about 6,500 rpm, I think that your probably going to benefit by gettin your engine to turn rpm in this area. hope this helps talk with you later.

Just thought of something else this morning, We had alot of problems with hydraulic lash adjusters turning the motor that hard so we went to mechanical. your rules may not allow that and if they don't , I would recommend using a 356 final drive tranny, they came in alot of Daytona's, Shadow's etc. For our size track we get around 5,800 rpm with 3rd gear using that combination.

RacingDodge37, probably the sharpest guy on 4m is 22dodge. He used to race 2.2s. He has an answer for just about anything. He is the one that told me about the 2.5 rods.

Hey, Bob, my friend Tim just picked up an '84 Charger at the junkyard. Drove it on the trailer for 150 bucks. He showed me the tips you sent him. Thanks, they make a lot of sense.
