I want to replace my cam but i dont know which one to get. With mopar, Crane Cams,Comp Cams, i cant decide. I'm leaning more towards the mopar one. My truck will be used for some racing and some light towing every once and a while.

MOPAR - thats what I'm going with. I'm going with the purple shaft over the R/T optioned one.

RAM360SST - have you priced installation or are you doing it yourself. If you haven't checked in to the cost of having it installed , better save up some more denaro's

Look in Engine Masters magizine Vol 3, No 1. There is a great article in there on the technology that goes into a Compcam. Stuff I never thought about. Harmonic wave lengths and such.

Crane, Competition Cams, etc. and Mopar cams are all pretty decent cams as far as quality goes. Mopar makes damn good, well-thought out profiles for their engines.

Overall, I'd have to say that for my money's worth, Competion Cams makes the very best cams on the market today.

From studying this issue at length the past few months, I've come to believe that the assymetrical profile of the Mopar R/T cam or the Mopar 380 hp crate engine cams are better suited to the "tuned intake manifold" and Magnum heads we have. Also, the computers (both stock and R/T high performance) are programmed to benefit from that assymetrical profile without an enormously lengthy amount of duration -- more lift is generally preferable. But as many of us have discussed before, if you increase the amount of lift even to the level of the R/T cam (that is supposedly perfectly matched to the R/T high performance computer, by the way) you should beef up the rest of the valve train, especially the valve springs and retainers.

Crane, Comp Cams, and the rest all make something similar that would work very well. They also make cheaper cams with less sophisticated profiles. As I recall, the old Crane Fireball, many of the Mopar Purple cams and other brands had intake and exhaust durations of equal length and enough lift to help what you have run better.

Many of the so-called Purple Mopar Cams, including the 284/284 duration one that I think Mikey is using, are higher performance in many ways than the stock cam, but not necessarily the very best choice for us with our computer run machines.

My dad owns a used car lot, so his mechanic can do it. So I don't have to worry about the labor cost. Is their anything I have to worry about with dodge engines. The mechanic has rebuilt chevy, and fords engines, but not a dodge, he said the it would be the same thing.

If you want some serious power and want to run a stall converter, crower makes a cam with 274/274 (216/216@.050) with .505/.505 lift.

I just finished some more research about cams. Checked out Competition Cams', Crane's and Crowers' online. Also phoned Comp Cams.

Lot's of neat stuff.

First, surprise! The Mopar Perfomance R/T cam is Crane's "CompuCam 2030 - #704121"!!! Crane makes many (if not all) other cams for Mopar and Mopar Performance, too!

Competion Cams says it makes only 2 cams that are compatable with stock or modified Ram Magnum 318s and 360s running on computers. Their theory utilizes assymetrical patterns, a little more duration than the Crane (R/T) and lot's more lift!

Crower makes three cams we can choose from, for mileage, for a daily driver, and for trucks with lots of modifications.

CRANE (R/T):
260-264 .458/.467

Comp Cams:
262-264 .480/.512
264-274 .512/.512

Crower:
268-277 .478/.504
274-274 .475/.475
284-284 .492/.492

Amazingly, all of these offerings are sort of mild compared to what we used run in our hot rods a generation ago -- but they all do seem to emphasize lift as a way to the extra UUMPH without sacrificing emmissions -- especially Comp Cams.

It looks like Mikey is running about as hot a Mopar "Purple Shaft" as he can without setting off his "penalty" light.

On another note, just got back from a local Mopar only speed shop where the owner made me an offer to install a supercharger in exchange for car show advertisement.....this should be interesting....about 8 pages of legal stuff to review, but that's up my alley!

Actually, there is one slight difference between the R/T cam and crane compucam 2030. The R/T cam has a 109 centerline and the crane cam has a 114 centerline which means that the R/T cam will make more power sooner in the RPM band while the crane cam will gernerate a wider band of power over the RPMs. I would figure that the R/T cam would be better off of the line, but the crane cam would generate better overall gains.

Also, when changing the cam it would be wise to change the valve springs at the same time.
And if you don't have them, 1.7 rocker arms will also help.

Yep, don't forget the heavy duty springs and retainers, you're right. And it looks more and more like the 1.7 roller rockers by Crower are also in order.

BTW, FastDak, not to be a nitpicker, but the Crane and the Mopar Performance R/T cams both have 109 degree centerlines and they both also have 114 degree lobe separation angles, if I read it all right.

But you know what's really funny to me? The Crower "milage" cam is significantly more of everything than the Crane Compucam (or Mopar Performance R/T cam.

Sorry, I stand corrected Meangreen, guess I spoke too soon. You are right about the crower cams, they are real beasts, however, they are not emissions legal. One other problem I have with crower's milage cam (correct me if I'm wrong) with 1.7s the exhaust lift is greater than MP valve springs are recommended for (.525). Maybe crower also sells matched springs for their cams.

Question

Correct me if I am wrong, but...

We already have a roller cam, which means we have roller lifters. So, when installing a new roller cam can we reuse the stock lifters?

Yes you can reuse the lifters. I think that the R/T cam package comes with new lifters that may be a little lighter than stock.

Thanks RJB40, I had fun and learned lots doing it.

BTW FastDak, you're right about the Crower cam with 274-274 duration, it's the same cam, I just listed the total valve lift with 1.6 ratio rockers vice 1.7 rockers.

Crower was kind enough to list both at their site www.crower.com. If anyone else wants to check out that site or www.cranecams.com or www.compcams.com there is some interesting stuff there. Can't remember which one has it, but there is a nice 3 or 4 page tutorial on cams and cam function there.
