Default Adjusting Roller Rockers for a 440

I just bought my 68 Dodge Charger and the guy that I bought it from told me I would have to adjust the roller rockers if I wanted to bracket race. How do I adjust them and are there any tools I'm going to need? Do I adjust them by sound or by a gauge of some sort?

Thank you for all who responds.

Tyler

Ok. Been here before. First, we need to know if it is a solid or hydraulic cam. If it is a solid we need to know the valve lash in thousands of an inch for the intake and exhaust valves. If it is a hydraulic we need to know the type of lifter, street or race. From therer we will be able to help you.

cuda367 is right. You should track down the previous owner before he gets lost. He should have the answers for you. The more info you can get the better you will know your engine. If you can find out if it is solid or hydraulic and who made it ,that info alone would be a big help. And at least something to start with. I hope he isn`t to hard to find.

Ok here it goes. I know Morpar Performance makes the camshaft. It's a Mechanical with .590 lift and 312/312 advertised duration. The valve lash is 28/32 and center line is 106. Also the O-Lap is 104.

Hope this helps.

Also it has Stage VI heads and I was wondering what kind of intake and carb would be best for this engine.
I tried a Edlebrock Perfomer RPM and it wouldn't fit under the hood.

Very Good. Rotate engine clockwise til #1 cylinder (front left side) is up on compression. Ign rotor pointing at #1 spark plug wire. Confirm by wiggling rockers on #1 cylinder, both should be loose. Using .028 and .o32 feeler gauge set as follows. Gauge should slide snuggly between valve tip and roller. Also remember valve on head run EIIEEIIE.
IN #2 ex #8 Rotate engine 90 deg. clockwise
IN #1 ex #4 Rotate 90
In #8 ex #3 R 90
In #4 ex # 6 R 90
In # 3 ex #5 R 90
In # 6 ex #7 R 90
In #5 ex #2 R 90
In #7 ex #1 Done

Check out the Mopar Performance Engine book.

They show a 4 position method that makes it quick and easy.

I know about the four position method, works well on street cams on down, real race cams use the eight.

8 is grate

cuda 367 is correct. The 8 step method is more accqrate then the 4 step. Especially when you get into the dual pattern cam grinds. Mopar performance sells a decal with that info on the 8 step adjustment procedure. If you get 2 put one under the hood for quick refferance and one on the inside top lid of your tool box for future refferance. Works out good for me.

I bought one of those neat trigger switches. One clip on each side of the starter. Just bump the engine where the rocker you're wanting to adjust is at BDC then adjust away. I'm running the same cam and adjust mine before taking the car out of the garage (every time). Of course I'm a little paranoid since I trashed a complete Crane Roller setup for no other reason than stupidity!

Good luck!

Greg
