I have a "70 Charger 500" with a 383. It runs a 16.1 1/4 mile. I think this is slow but I don't have any idea. The engine is stock. Does anyone know what a 70 383 should run in the 1/4 mile? Also, does anyone know what the static compersion is for this engine. I'm getting 105 to 120 psi.

Sounds like you have a problem. Is this an original 383 Magnum or did someone slip in another 383 in stock form over the years? Do you have an automatic trans or stick? Excessive wheel spin? What is your rear axle ratio? What kind of carb are you using? I assume the engine is otherwise stock, correct? how much does the compression vary between cylinders? Have you hooked up a vacuum gauge to rule out a burnt valve or vacuum leak? There are a bunch of other variables, but I think you get the idea. I haven't seen any 1970 road tests, but I would estimate a stock 1970 383 Magnum with Torqueflite and 3.23 gears should be turning high 14's to low 15's. A test of a '71 Charger 500 with a 383, 3 speed manual and 3.23 did 15.15 in the quarter. The '71 engine has 35 fewer horses than the '70 version.

Something is amiss. My friend had a 68 RR with 383 just headers and electronic ing. 2.73 gears and it ran 14.55 with TAs on it.

Charger70......,You should be somewhere between 15.00 & 15.20 and anywhere from around 95 to 100 MPH. The fastest my 70 went in right off the showroom floor was 14.93 @ 100.44 MPH. That was a 383 4v carb,727 Torqueflite and 323 sure-grip. That was the only time it saw 14's in stock condition.

For what its worth your compression readings sound quite low. And like already stated you need to give us more info.
I'm wondering what the elevation is at the track that you ran the car at? How much above sea level are you? |

Your compression readings are low. They should be 140-145 minimum. Try a wet test as well.
For reference, I had a 70 GTX w/440 4bbl, 727, 2:72 Sure-grip, 111,000 miles that went 14.2 @ 100 MPH - 1/4 mile. The motor had never been touched. |

My 8.2 to 1 400 with cast iron intake and 484/292 cam runs 13.39 at 104mph. That's in a 3750 lb Aspen with 3.91 gear.
You should be running a lot faster than 16.00's I think with slicks you should be in the low 14.00's. I tried a '69 383 intake (the one with the 4 holes) on my 400 and found that it was over 3 tenths slower than the 1976-1978 smog thermoquad 400 intake. That's a big difference. Even the Mopar Performance engine book doesn't recommend the 383 intake. They're a ton of them in wrecker. You should try the smog intake.
