Default Hughes VS Comp Cams

I'm trying to decide between a Hughes Engines cam #HE2330BL... and a Comps cams Extreme Energy 268H..

Has any one out there had any experience with these cams..

Has anyone swapped out the Comp for a Hughes?? was it better worse or what???

Thanx

PS running a 440 with KB pistons mildly ported 213 heads

I think the comp extreme energy cams are simular to the hughes cams, but I haven't seen a comparison test of the two.
I have been supporting the Hughes/Engle cams because they are devoted to developing cams and parts specifically for Mopars. If these companies did not exist, comp cams may not have ever developed a simular cam to compete with them.

Go with the Hughes cam. If you want one that is even better than the Hughes cam, go with a Racer Brown cam.

Although I have no experince with the Hughs cams I have run the 274 xtreme comp in a small block using KB pistons. Thats is a very powerful cam. Comps did there home work on those cams. Although I always experinced slight valve train noise with it. I was using stock valve train. Which was supposedly ok with that grind I had a tick that I never could get out. Even after switching lifters. I was thinking that a few other people on here experinced the same problem! Have you checked on Compos Purple + cams made for chrysler engines by comps? I think my next cam choise will be huughes cams!

I would use the cam from Hughes

Comp Cams are ground for chevy lifters (.842")
it their online catalog it has lobe specifications for all the cams
the xtreme energy cams have a minimum tappet diameter of .842"
look for your self crap cams catalog

also if you buy a cam from Hughes you will be supporting an all mopar business not a chevy loving business

Comp Cams currently have new, very aggressive hydraulic grinds. They are not in their catalog yet, but are available. Call them and ask. http://www.compcams.com/information/...yID=1275147831

Yeah, but why buy cheap wanna be cam from comp cams, that is nowhere as good as a Hughes or Racer Brown cam. I would personally spend the extra $20 and get a Racer Brown cam.

Ed, you wouldn't happen to have any specs for Racer Brown hyd. cams,
would you? Just curious. Anyone here got any specs?

By the way: the Comp Xtreme Energy hydraulic cams run almost no pre-load,
so they're a little more persnickety when setting up the lifters, and I imagine
the lack of pre-load would necessitate more adjustments than a cam with a
more standard .030" preload. My brother pulled his hair out setting up one of
these cams on his 440. He likes the cam now, but he'll opt for a Hughes
hydraulic or Ultradyne solid on next motor.

Even though Comp Cams are now making lobes for .904 Mopar lifters, I will buy a Hughes/Engle, Racer Brown or Ultradyne as these companies supported Mopar fans with special grinds long before Comp Cams did. Comp Cams was not there when we needed them.

Racer Brown has a large number of preset grinds, however they will also custom grind as well. For a Racer Brown cam, the best thing to do, is to call them and tell them what you've got (engine size, static compression, tranny, rear ratio, etc) and tell them what your expectations are (street, hot street, street/strip, strip only). They will then suggest the best cam for the application.

Default One more step up...

One step up on Racer brown is Cam Motion cams... Just about the best (most science) you will find in a semi - affordable cam...

just pick a right cam for the rest of your combo and be happy. I think that's way more important than picking the cam according to the name on the box. Hughes cams are ground by Engle. Engle offers similar cams too. There are others, like Ultradyne etc. that have quick rate cams. I bleieve the Mopar Performance cams, at least some of them, are old Racer Brown designs? Personally I have never used Hughes or Racer Brown cams in my engines because no one offers them here. Among the brands I have used are Comp Cams, Crane, Ultradyne, Cam Motion etc. and can't really say that one is better over the other. All of them have worked, also the "chevy" grinds. Lately I have been using Scott Brown at http://www.straightline-perf.com/ designed custom grinds and have had really good results with them, right now I have two cams coming from him. I'll be building a mild street 440 and will give the comp cams new grinds a try on that one.

You can't find the Racer Brown or the Hughes cam near you, as they must be purchased direct.

I've never heard of cam motion. I do know that Racer Brown has been around for over 36 years and they wrote the book, when it comes to a great cam.

The main reason that I recommend them, is that they have so many grind choices. If they don't have a specific grind for your application, they will create one.

Any can company will grind you a custom cam, and companies like comp cams has had several different lobe profiles in their catalog for years you can choose from. Hughes cams can be bought from Engle too, because they make them. They both are propably great cams, but so are many others.

I have used them. They work and the price is right. They feel rather mild for the numbers and there certainly are better cams on the market. But for a budget job they'll work just fine.

The new Comp Extreme Energy cams that charger_dan lists, look simular to the Hughes cams.

The XE275HL was used in the Car Craft / Mopar Muscle 440 engine that has been in several articles. This cam is simular to the Hughes HE3038 cam.
I would think both cams would make close to the same power?
It would be nice if these newer cams gave duration @ 0.200" like they do with roller cams, that would really help determine how simular the ramp rates are.

 Aw shucks, too late...

I posted too late! I have the Hughes HE 2330 AL in my '74 Dart Sport 360 and really like the TORQUE that mild-appearing stick puts out. 223/230 @ .050 with .505/.515 lift, really packs a lot of air in my pocket-ported 587's, with the Demonsizzler 850 TQ and stock dual-plane, KB .050 quench domes, bullet-proof bottom end and headers teasing a 3.90 sure-grip. Tonight I was showing off for a parts counter friend on the frontage road and seriously roasted the T/A's! You should like what you got, though. Let us know! 440cj

Those specs Charger Dan posted on the new CompCams series looks familiar. I put in a XE274 in my Charger last year with 1.6 rockers, giving me virtually identical specs to their new 275 version. BTW, happy with the cam, but I have noticed some rather noisy valvetrain also. Didn't know this was a common problem. Also did not know that they needed almost zero preload, although that is where I have them set at.

Biggrin Da cam

My compression ratio is 10.4 to one, but my cylinder pressure with the gapless rings is above 190 at LEAST. I haven't remembered to borrow a tester when I change plugs but will soon. Will post pressure then. The cam sounds great now that I have the distributor dialed in and all else in super tune. Nice lope, idles at 700 rpm in Park and 650-700 in Drive, lotsa torque. Anyone should really like it and holds good vacuum at idle for da power brakes, too.
