Default slant six cold starting probelms?

I have a problem with my 74 dusters 225 slant six. Its a cold starter. I have to hold the gas pedal down halfway for 5 minuits before it will idle by itself. Choke problem? Once it warms up it idles fine, but it takes a good 5 minuites. Does anyone have a choke thermostat laying around that would work in my 74? Does anyone else think thats the problem?

I have the same problem in my '75 duster slant six, connecting the choke thermostat helped, but it still doesnt like to idle for the first few minutes. What is you idle speed set at, is it too low? You could increase the idle speed, but that might also cause some dieseling (it did in mine). I find the best thing to do is to warm it up for 3 minutes or so, then rev it up so it wont stall and slap it into drive and just go, it will warm up quicker that way, and you wont just be sitting there waiting.

My idle is set so that when the engine is warm it is at the correct idle speed. I tried to turn the idle faster, which helped, until it warmed up then id did what yours did and dieseled when i stopped the engine. Mabe its a faulty thermostat or vacum line? I cant figure it out

Is your choke working at all? Is it almost closed prior to starting a cold engine? How about the fast idle cam? Is that working? Is there a heater tube from the manifold to the choke housing? If so, is it rusted through?

If you can't find a replacement coil for the choke, you could put in a manual cable operated choke control. Most auto parts stores carry them and they are fairly cheap.

The choke seems to be working ok but not perfect. Im thinking that it might have somthing to do with the fast idle cam. there is a tube from the manifold to the housing but I dont think that door that supposed to open and close for hot air is working right or at all. Ill look it over again

The choke and fast idle cam have to work as a team. There should be linkage between the two. Faster idle and a rich mixture are necessary on a cold engine. There is also a choke unloader, either mechanical or vacuum operated. The heater tube, if there, should allow warm air into the choke housing, causing the choke to open as the engine warms up.
