Question What weight motor oil?

I just purchased a 79 D-100 pickup 225 1bbl. This truck will only be used in the summer for occasional "handyman" jobs. I live in MN. Truck has 88,200 orig. miles, but the old farmer seldom changed the oil, just added. Bummer! I am thinking of using 10W-30, 15W-40, or straight 30wt. Any comments greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I use 10W-30, i would deffinetly suggest going with a multigrade oil instead of just a plain 30wt. or somthing similar, just incase you end up having to drive it in the winter.

High mileage + 1970's specs = 20w50 Castro

for my 2C I would like to disagree with dust. Unless the motor is damaged 20w50 will lower power and gas mileage. So unless it is smoking or has low oil pressure I would use 10w30 with a zinc additive to protect your cam or just 5w-40 for trucks this has the additives to protect you older motor, new auto oils do not have the zinc and phos to protect your motor.

Default Try this

Buy a qurt of Amsoil engine cleaner, and follow the directions on the bottle. It will absolutely clean the inside of that engine of all the crud. Then, I'd fill it with 10-40 Valvoline and drive happy. The rings might want to re seat after the cleaning, but you won't have to run clean oil through a filthy engine.
I used it on my Cummins last change, when I switched to synthetic Royal Purple. Really good stuff.

He is correct but the performance/milage difference would be hardly noticable. Thanks for reminding me about zinc. I recommend 15W40 diesel oil if the engine is not leaking/burning oil at a comparable weight. If it is leaking/burning oil, then 20W50 Castrol.

This could be a bad thing as it would open any leaks you may have. This is especially bad if the engine has been using Pennzoil due to its sealing effect.

That is sad but true I have ( cleaned ) up a lot of motors just to have them start leaking. IMHO I would just change oil more often.
