Biggrin The return of the slant sixer

Hey! what's up guys? feels good to be back, gotta tell you I sold my '80 Aspen some months ago and I bought a new 4cyl. for the daily commuting. But something didn't feel right, i was really missing working on my old dodge. So I bought (just last Friday!) a '79 Dodge Dart (yeah, it's an Aspen, but they were rebadged as Dart in Mexico). It's a perfect car for a full restoration, only 70k in the odometer and no rust! So, thank God, the slantsixless days are over. Hope to show you some pics of this new Aspen one of these days. Anyway, I would appreciate any answer or comments on this question: when I accelerate the engine (about 1500-1600 rpms) i can hear a light knocking coming from the engine block, is the engine busted? is there any other cause for this noise? the car's maintenance was really neglected the last couple of years, I noticed that when I bought it, but no prob. i'm ready to spend some money fixing up my new slant.

Thanks for any comments.

Welcome back to the real world of Mopars. I'm only guessing here, but it could be detonation with a poor tune up and todays gas, or some piston slap. Check your oil pressure with a known gauge. If it's good, I'd bet on the piston slap or bad tune up. Does it go away when it gets hot? If so that's a good indication that it's psiton slap.

Good guess! actually, the noise does decrease when the engine gets to its normal operation temp. it almost dissapears. I haven't had the time for doing a good tune up or checking ignition timing. If the noise persists after the tune up, would new rings solve the problem?

I did not catch the milage, but if it's high and it's piston slap, I'd say the clearance is too big, or might have a taper to the cylinder wall. I'm betting pistons and a rebore might be the only fix if it has high milage. Hard to say till you get it apart and measure everything.
