Advice Needed
Just bought a 1974 225 slant 6 Duster.I can handle the body and interrior but could use some help with the mechanical. With fuel prices what they are and will only go higher I want to keep the 6 not looking to build a Hot Rod just clean the 6 up for a little better gas milage and performance.Like to do a mild street cam again not looking for a race car with that a header and complete new exhaust out the back.Is it possible to gain a little performance and economy and have something that does NOT sound like a angry bug out the tail pipes? I need to do this a bit at a time live on a fixed income.Where do I find cams/ headers ect for the slant 6? With a bump on the cam and exhaust do I need a upgrade in carb or would the single barrel do the job and is the factory electronic ignition something I should upgrade again not looking to go to the races just a cruiser that sounds good runs well and looks great.

Being a '74 the car came with factory electronic ignition.
I would do just a stock rebuild if it needs it. OR if it runs fine I would just clean it up and maybe put new bearings in it and a oil pump. The last one I had went 280,000 miles and was running just fine when I sold it ('78 volare $200). The best mileage I ever got was 27 mpg. I normally got in the lower 20 's. |

A good cam that will work with no other mods necessary is Isky p# 152115. It is 256 dur. w/ .425 lift. It idles like a stock cam and makes more torque & a bit more HP as well. I have this cam in my 6, and it works great. As far as headers, there are several different vendors to choose from such as Hooker, Hedman & Clifford. The Clifford headers I have fit well and I have had no problems with them whatsoever. The p# is 55-0010. They are a dual-outlet style header so you can run dual ex. or single ex. with a Y-pipe. I run single ex. with 2" pipe and a Turbo muffler. Sounds good without being too loud. Check out Clifford Performance website for availability. The stock electronic ign. if in good shape works great & will be fine. Good luck!

Thankyou for the info. Did you use the stock single barrel carb?

I have used both the stock (Holley 1920) 1 bbl on the stock intake, and dual 1bbl Holleys on an Offy dual intake. Another good set up is either the stock or Mopar M1/Clifford intakes with the Holley 350cfm 2bbl. The Clifford intake uses adapter plates so you can run either a 2 or 4bbl. Offenhauser also makes a 4bbl intake that works well with the Holley 390cfm carb. Probably the best all around set up for a mild 6 would be the 2bbl, IMO.
