Default Carb needs to be primed in order to run...

Hi...I have a 1965 Valiant, that runs excellent. But...as of late, I need to pour gas straight into the carberator in order to start her. Once started she will continue to run.

I replaced the filter, and pump (I replaced the electric pump that the previous owner had put on)

If you take the line off after the filter but before the carb it will spit out gas.

Any ideas, this is really frustrating.

Thanks!!!

Check for a defective needle & seat or stuck float in the carb.

also why do you think it suddeny lost power? and...something I didn't mention is she will not hold an idle when cold...is that a sign of the accelerator pump?

Carb could be leaking/vacume leaking.
Look down the carb while opening the butterflys if it squirts cool if not just rebuild the carb.
I don't know for sure that it's carb just looking at the obvious to help U.
If it's just a cold thing then look at choke, in fact maybe the choke went bad and closed while you were driving down the road? Pin choke open and take it for a drive fully warmed up.

pin choke?? please explain. thanks....also...i do not know if I mentioned it but sometimes I don't need to 'prime' it sometimes if I just take the line off at the fuel filter and let it breath...then she fires right up.

humm...Try this wd40 spray around carb intake while running if the idle goes down there's a vac leak, take a skrewdriver and with the handle lightly and
maybe not so lightly smack the bowl of the carb
[the front where it say's Holley] this might clear some of what valiant 64 is talking about stuck needle seat/dirt in the seat issue, you might even have to remove the bowl to fix it if thats what it is. but check for vac leak along with every thing else that's been mentioned. how are your points?

Use what ever spay you want c this clogs the leak temporally & in the process lowers the idle letting you know there is a vacume leak. Also if U have/can get a vacume gauge/tester and hook hose to vacume port, if reading jumps all over or bounces then there's a vacume leak.
Use a piece of coat hanger or something to hold the choke open just to see if it
fixes your problem.

very cool man I really apreciate ya! does the choke closing seem to be what was happening with ny stalling? some one put wd40 all over the choke a few days agp as it was sticking...could that be the loss of power problem?

A buddy of mine seems to think its the "sock: inside the tank..any thoughts?

I could not get her to start at all this morning...choke was closed and she would just burn the gas I put in the carb. Then I notice all though the pump was humming along it was pulling zero gas into the filter, I took the line off right after the pump and nothing was coming...well a dribble at best.

Thoughts?

Empty gas tank?
Usually the sock has disintegrated and gone through the motor long ago.
Has the car sat a long time? If so tank could be full of crap clogging the pickup
this happened with my 71 swinger. I had to remove pickup coat hanger it out.
Also had buy a new tank.
