There were a few different models of 3 speed depending on body style and year.

3-speeds are not regarded as desirable, it seems... if you find on it shouldn't be very expensive to buy...

For an A or F-body, they are about 4" shorter than for a B, C or E-body car. Prior to 1966 in A-body, 1965 in B/C bodies, they had the flanged rear output for the ball & trunnion driveshaft. There were two different units used behind the slant 6, the A745 (in heavy duty use) and the A903.

Later, about 1970, the A230 came in. It has a bolt-on side for access to the gears, the change levers are mounted in this side cover. Earlier boxes were the top cover style, both bolt up to the same bellhousings and there are 4-speed bellhousings that have provision to bolt up the 3-speeds as well.

Which 3 speed do I have? Non synchro 1st gear, and no way to mount a floor shifter on it! It came in my 72 Duster behind the 198 and was column shifted.

I know a guy here in TN that said he ould sell me the better type 3 speed.

BTW that tranny is the same length as the 833OD 4 speed I am putting in.

Most likely it's an A903 if it's non-synchro on first gear... though it's possibly an A745, which I wasn't sure were still around in '72...

The A833s also come on both lengths, and in the shorter one (as for the Duster) they have two different driveshaft yokes. Watch for either 26-spline or 30-spline in that.

30-spline... basically means it was probably mounted behind a V8... stronger of the two versions of the A833 overdrive...

I expect you'll have to change your yoke.

Actually I bought a 74 Dsuter with a 225 and an 833OD. So I got the correct bell housing etc. They didn't do OD's until 75 or 76.

I've never seen a small '904' output shaft 833od in my life, all 727 shafts.
Small outputs were 3spd features.

I have a whole bunch of A833s, both overdrive and direct top gear versions, in A-body length...

I have more with 26-spline outputs than 30-spline. The overdrive units with the smaller output shaft had the finer gears with different tooth counts too, they were only fitted to slant 6s.

I know there are a body length 727 spline 4 spd & od's cause I've seen them.

Not saying I disbelieve u but give me/us a year production run date so we all have an idea of what to look for or stay away from depending on the are application, though I do remember I guy a long time ago trying to sell me a 4spd that had the 904 spline a body output but I figured he had a 4spd cover on a 3 spd, he said it was out of a 64 barracuda, I instead bought another from him that turned out to be an iron case od unit so naturally thought the small spline unit was an attempted sham.

What can I say......

They seem to be all over...

Perhaps, taking a leaf from the overdrive situation, they were all from slant 6 cars?

You can always distinguish the overdrive ones by the bearing retainer size.

The 'wide ratio' direct top gear version is another difficult one. These were for slant 6s (and 273s?) and seem to only come in the A-body length with ball & trunnion flange on the output. Yet once on eBay I asked a guy about a B-body unit and he responded that it was a 3.09:1 first gear in that.

It certainly makes sense that a 'performance item' like a 4-speed wouldn't often be ordered in a slant 6 equipped full size car, though.

That happened a long time ago and since know what I'm looking at.

There must be far fewer small splined 4 spds then large spline thats for sure.

good stuff.

Only 833OD's behind V8's was all small blocks. I have seen them behind 318's and 360's in vans. They were the long B and E body length.

Default A833od

Wasn't aware of the cast iron OD box, thought all were aluminum castings, learn something new every day.
I know of a guy racing a 440 ci Charger in Canada with an A833OD gearbox, not my choice, but he says that it is solid and hasn't given any trouble.

Passon Performance can mod these boxs to handle Hemi's. If you are cammed right they can be used in racing. Wide spread on the ratios.

When I was last in America I bought a A833 "rebuilder" from a reliable guy plus a repair kit, when I stripped it down back in Australia it was history. The seller has done the right thing by me, so now I will be looking for another but have been considering an OD box. No hurry at the moment due to changed circumstances.
