Default 1964 Plymouth Valiant

We've had a 1964 Valiant sitting in the garage for a while now. My dad bought it in the mid 90's, and used it as a work car for a while. We're starting the process of looking it over, and deciding what to do with it. Right now it's got a slant six sitting in it. We're looking to get a bit more power in it, but we'd like to keep the slant six in it since it has the push button tranny, and I'm kind of fond of it. As a last resort, we have a 340 that was built for pro-street in the 80's.

Any suggestions for pulling more power out of a slant six, and sites for reference?
